Normandy Visit base suggestions

While it's not hard to find a decent French restaurant in Normandy, the village/small town of Benouville, right near the Caen Ferry, has a wonderful little place called La Glycine. It also has rooms (which I've not stayed in, but have no reason to believe they're not as good as the restaurant).

A busy year in France, D day, Olympics: TDF finishing in Nice this year I see. Thinking of visiting when the dust has settled, maybe early Sept.

Fascinating thread. Shame that Simon Trew book isn't available as an ebook.

Not wishing to hijack the thread, but any ideas for a similar pleasant town not far from (Paris) Beauvais Airport, possibly with a WWI connection?

I haven’t booked this yet and am thinking the same. Already travelling elsewhere at Easter and think the summer will be impossibly busy.

I must get my finger out (to be honest I did consider Colditz as an alternative this year), my brothers are expecting me to have this booked already really.

How far away do you want to be? Looking at the map there are some great towns and cities about 1hr away from Beauvais. Amiens would be a good shout.

Anyone know if there's any organised group tours from UK that transport you around and cover the main sites of interest?

I found you need some French to get along. It’s not very English speaking when you get out into rural France. At least that’s how we have found it around Loos and Albert.

Try here, never used them although seen their vehicles over there.

If you want a town Gisors would be my pick, it's fairly small but with an ancient castle (average, but free) a decent set of restaurants and boulangeries. In that area though, if you're happy with rural you should be going to the Vexin Francais regional park, in particular Villarceaux. I wrote a very short piece on it here:

You could do much worse than stay at Chaussy, at Au Relais de Chaussy. Gaelle will make you an organic 3 course dinner for 18 euros! Right on the London-Paris cycle route too.

Probably not to far away and accessible by train if possible. Just looking for a couple of nights before heading to a gite in the Loire Valley

A long time ago late June 1990 we booked Eurocamp sites for 17 days little tour of France.
The 1st site was called Camping La Vallee Houlgate Normandy, we had 3 days there, it was fantastic for the D-day experience, the beaches themselves the nearby inland battles and Pegasus Bridge. Left me with an immense sense of loss and admiration of the bravery of not only our people but the allies from just about everywhere. Its all changed now since 1990, looks a really nice place to stay as a base.

Travelled to Northern Brittany and stayed there for 3 days, then 3 days at Southern Brittany, 5 days in the Vendee was fantastic too. Finally 3 days at Deauville Normandy so we were near to Caen ferry port to go back to Portsmouth.

Been all over France since, but found Normandy the friendliest

I've put an attachment of the camping site website, still looks very similar but no house tents, just caravans and chalets by the looks.

Staying near Bourges. Will be looking for a town to stay in for a couple of nights on the way back to Beauvais if you have any ideas.
Cheers. I can't say I know that area south of Paris very well, but logic would suggest Chartres which is about halfway to Beauvais. I've only passed through it, but my better half says it's a pleasant town with a beautiful cathedral.
