You still had to phone early and get a cancellation if you wanted to see the Dr that day, otherwise it could be a week or two to see one.
In 2005 I switched practice to one near work, used my work address as my home, as they had an open surgery from 9am to 11am twice a week so I didn't have to go through the hassle of calling at 8.29am = no answer, call at 8.30am = engaged, call at 8.31am = you are caller no 37 in the queue.
