Nigel Lawson dies aged 91

1) chaired climate change deniers panel
2) chaired Vote Leave campaign
3) deregulated the financial markets causing the 07/08 banking crash
4) sold off umpteen national assets, didn’t reinvest the money
5) took the UK current account deficit from 1% to 5%
6) was energy minister for closing the mines and kicking the north in the nuts

He had North Sea oil money piling in all the while too, he was one of the jammiest treasurers ever - and he and Margaret Thatcher wasted it.

I can’t believe the press don’t ever mention any of this. It’s almost as if the press are owned by ….

Well when you put it like that …….😂👍

That "old man" caused the destruction of whole communities.
He fed the rich and *****d the rest.
He didnt give two monkeys about us.
His calling was to protect international casino gangsters and hedge-funders.
His policies centered on selling 40 years of public investment and services - paid for by the hard work of ordinary British people.
He continued the bargain-buy, give-away of public assetts and feathered the nest of international financiers and big bankers.
Good riddance to him.

And the same to Thatcher whilst I mention it.

It seems really strange behaviour when the passing of an old man emboldens the trolls of this board. Be better than that!
People aren't trolling, anyone who grew up in the NE in the 1980s still feel the effects of Thatcherism and her wrecking ball and personal vendettas against British Industry. He actively participated in this.

Cannot revel in his death, that's uncalled for, but to question his "economic brilliance" as is currently being portrayed in the media - 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

He was a member of a democratically elected government so would be expected to carry out the policies of that government, which he seems to have done. The fact that these policies weren’t popular with lots of people doesn’t mean he should be condemned to hell! Plenty of the haters of Thatcher’s policies ( myself included) voted for Blair, who is now a target for another hate faction. It’s how Democracy works, unfortunately some people seem to take it all as a personal attack and react with venom towards the person administering the policies.

People pass away, it's part of life. Also it's a football message board with people with lots of different opinions. He was a divisive figure in life and his passing will not change the feelings of folks either for or against him.

He was more that a "member" though wasn't he? He was (essentially, perhaps arguably) second in command. He was not forced to "carry out the policies" indeed many of them would have been his ideas or at least he would have been part of the consensus forming those policies. He is entirely culpable for those policies. He could, had he been so minded, have stayed on the back benches through the Thatcher years.

On the radio this morning they were talking about water quality, that every river in England suffered a pollution event last year & it is cheaper for water companies to dump sewage untreated & pay a fine than improve the infrastructure to prevent that.

They then seamlessly segued into a puff piece about Nigel Lawson by some tory old buffer who lauded him for the privatisations of public utilities which enabled massive investment and innovation and turned everyone Conservative or something.

Almost as if the media are deliberately trying to induce cognitive dissonance in the population, a kind of Doublethink for beginners.

He was a slightly less virulent strain of the tory virus that has since evolved into the current lethal variant that is killing the country after he weakened it.
