Nice piece on 2Tone...

I had tickets to see the Specials at the Coatham Bowl just before they made it big. The gig got cancelled due to Neville Staple twisting his ankle, only for them to appear on TOTP that week.

2Tone - A great sound.

I saw the Selecter at the Rock Garden on Tues 19th August 1980, we'd beaten Leeds 3-0 and Pauline Black commented on the result when they came on stage, the place went mental. The memory might be selective but I don't recall that being one of the more "problematic" Rock Garden nights. There was fighting, there always was but 40+ years later I don't remember her calling people out on stage that night.

Some people say they played in 79 as well, I don't remember that night and certainly didn't go so that may have been the night referred to in the article.

Don't think there was as many fights at the Rock Garden as legend makes out. Certainly not at the many shows I went to both on the Rock and Punk nights. Sure it was rough everyone pogoing, beer getting lashed about and people getting shoved all over but not many actual fights. That's said I did get a kicking off the bouncers after a 999 show. We were on the way out and they said something and my wife made some flippant remark back which they took offence to and took it out on me.

On another note. Saw The Selector a few times but one of the most unusual places was Royal Hotel in Redcar. Did not usually have bands on and I can't remember any others but they certainly played the big room on the sea front. Whether it was billed as Selector or Pauline Black I can't remember.

It was more towards the end it got really violent when skinheads started frequenting the place just for drinking & fighting, no interest in the music.

The Fall and Crass gigs are stuff of legend, they were both really bad nights but early days it was great, no more trouble than at any other place. At the end skinheads were just walking round picking fights or just laying into people who couldn't fight back. It was awful.
