Nice football.

Speaking of nice football, I thought the corner that led to Rogers chance just after they went 1-0 up was really well worked, looked slick as f*ck. Hope we try more stuff like that tbh, lord knows we need a switch up on corners with how little we ever get from them.

Was reallly good that and the touch inside from Rogers to create the chance was great.

Shame we never scored could have maybe made the rest of the first half have a different feel about it

Minor criticism of carrick should have done what Rotherham did to us. Saying that on a whole I'd have Carrock every day of the week. The football we have seen since he came is brilliant to watch.

Not just us. I heard the other day corners overall have an xG of 0.02.

After years of watching Warnock and Pulis ball, give me this style of play any day of the week. In the Championship it generally works for us and we're good to watch. Against the likes of Chelsea you always run the risk of getting picked off with one sloppy pass and that's what happened last night. 5 or 6 sloppy passes in key areas results in that sort of scoreline. We were actually lucky in the first leg as there was a few sloppy passes in that game, the difference was that they didn't take their chances. Last night they were clinical and capitalised on just about every mistake we made.

People might think against the likes of Chelsea just resort to long ball. It isn't that easy when Carrick is trying to instill a certain style into the players.

As disappointing as last night was, we take it on the chin and trust in what Carrick is doing as he's the best manager we've had in a long time.

I think what you saw last night, and it has happened in games not involving the Boro as well, is that coaches have got wise to how you stop this playing out from the back.

They will now know the players in each team who aren’t comfortable with it or always turn a certain direction and the spaces to squeeze where the normal passing outlets are being used.

It’s the next evolution, the next thing is that teams will stop doing it and do something else.

They certainly pressed very well.

What struck me was just how fluid they were, with and without the ball. Wide players moving inside (and vice versa) and the timing and running lanes of Fernandez were incredible at times. We're unlikely to ever come up against that quality of movement in our league.

We have actually been a lot better than I expected at holding shape and being disciplined without the ball against both Villa and Chelsea (1st leg) but last night their movement and interchange was too good.

The playing out from the back baffles me at the best of times, but against a team like that is mental!
But nearly every top club plays that way now. Even non league clubs are doing it so it needs to be understood why not giving away needless possession by lumping it is important. Of course the irony is if you aren't comfortable or quick enough ( as we were last night) then you will concede possession in more dangerous positions

It was footballing suicide last night, and we continued with it. 🥴

They've been wise to it for years, but it's easier said than done.

I remember us beating West Brom when Darren Moore was manager. I hate Pulis but he got it spot on. Blocked off all the passing options but their centre back who was weakest on the ball who, after passing it back and forth between defenders for a bit they inevitably just hoofed it up the pitch.

They had loads of possession but created nowt. Then Ayala scored a winner late on. Moore claimed they "controlled the game" afterwards.

There'll always be ways to counter tactics and in this day and age with all the tech and analysis available coaches will work it out quicker and learn from other sides.

I don't think the approach of playing out from the back will change now, but there'll always be tweaks and tactical variations to it, just as there'll be tweaks to how teams try to counter it.

Yes I agree you will start seeing tactical variations to it, maybe involving more chipping over the press to space beyond in the midfield, you need players capable of that though otherwise it will just be the mini long ball which, let’s be honest, is easily dealt with in this day and age at all levels.
