NHS Nurses to strike?

Think we need a peasants** revolt - pitchforks, flaming torches the lot. 👍

** Peasants covers every class below the 10% of the country bleeding us dry. That's what they view us as.

Scary.

I'm waiting to hear what unison are doing for the civil service. I think they'll wait until the new Tory worse than the old Tory is in charge to see the scale of the cuts.

It's probably already too late. The pay award has been and gone. They won't get any more this year. This needed to be pro-active. Get it out before the pay award to show they were serious. Present options before it is announced as "If we receive below x will you support industrial action?". Then as soon as the paltry offer was announced then strike action could have been implemented immediately before it was accepted by Trusts.

Sad thing is that government probably sees NHS strikes as a chance to save money. It doesn't cost them anything, they save a days pay and the waiting list just gets slightly longer.

Part of the Tories long term plan to turn the population against the NHS. Will be lots of stories in the press about nurses who own a posh car or go on two holidays. Then when September comes it will be attack the teachers again.

I'm a current NMC member, but I won't be voting as I'm employed by a university rather than by the NHS. I think I would vote to strike if I were still in Frontline practice.

It's fairly commonly believed in the profession that the government resists increasing nursing salaries as it is one of biggest barriers to privatisation, not because wages are high, but due to the sheer number of nurses required.

I don't know which way a vote will go; the NMC and nurses are a relatively passive bunch. However, my impression is there is more support for this than I have known before.

The problem the nurses have is they've been to nice for far too long, and just sucked it up in favour patient care, obviously this is totally understandable. The problem is they've effectively been their second worst enemy after the government. This is in both regards to pay, and working with extremely low numbers, and not enough funding for what the public expect. Every time the Tories took a load out of their rucksack, the NHS workers have done what they can to pick it up and put it in theirs, even though it's broke their backs.

They should threaten to go on strike, it would cause absolute carnage but it's carnage anyway, and will only get worse if they don't. They're going to have to strike sooner or later to get what they want, which is probably still nowhere near what they deserve. They need to do it under this government, ideally with whoever is in after September. This will get the best result for them, as they will get something out of it, and it will also pulverise the Tories. Then Labour can come back in and start to fix things (but that will be a long slog). At least then, even if the Tories did win in 2025 or 2030, then they would end up taking the **** out of the NHS less (hopefully).

I'm sure we all have stories of being treated by nurses in their Gucci dresses, flashing their Rolexes at us before driving home in their Aston Martin to their 5 bedroom McMansion. At least, I'm sure the Daily Heil will.
