Next England Manager

This "he keeps picking out of form players" argument is getting tiresome. Who exactly do you think shouldn't be picked, and who do you think should replace them?

Listening to Talkshite every other day with people calling in saying "its a disgrace that he won't pick Foden". That is Foden who played 90 mins in each of our last 3 games and started the last 3 games of the world cup (benched against Iran and USA no doubt to save him for the tougher games.

I think the Euros will be Southgates last game as England manager. Who will replace him?
Probably, and it will lead to the wilderness years, as the players fracture as a group and go back to cliques, the team starts to underwhelm, and then the press turn quickly on the next guy while lamenting the halcyon days of reaching the later stages of competition under southgate.

You're right it is tiresome. I don't mind constructive criticism of any manager, but it makes my ears bleed whenever I hear people use wrong 'facts' against Southgate.

No England manager can please 100% of the fanbase 100% of the time. And for what it is worth, I think it is time to put Henderson into international retirement. I also don't think he should pick Phillips unless his form at West Ham improves markedly over the next couple of months. Personally I'd be having a look at Ross Barkley again, based on his form over the past 4 months. But nobody should pretend Barkley was in the running for a recall in October/November and was unfairly overlooked at that time.

Kobbie Mainoo is another who is worth considering for a central midfield berth. There's an argument against having too many young players, but then again Rice, Foden, Saka and Bellingham already have bags of big game experience and the likes of Walker and Stones should be older heads within the squad.

Based on Englands model, i actually think there's a chance it could be Carrick.

Southgate didn't set the world alight before he got the big job. But i think they look at young english managers with experience of the international scene.

Wasn't it Southgate who also recommended Carrick to Gibbo?

Other than carrick, some other obvious names sticking out:

- Gary O'neil
- Potter
- Howe

I have no problem with Southgate staying on, but if he does go, then Gary O'Neil would me a good shout, as much as I don't really like him.

Wonder if they'll be looking at somebody like Russel Martin?

Actually, just as i typed that i remembered he's scottish - or at least played for them.

I agree Henderson should be forcibly retired, however there hasn't exactly been a queue of players in line to replace him.
Mainoo hadn't played a game when the last squad was announced, JWP is hardly any better (despite scoring the occasional free kick when he played for Southampton) and after that you're really scraping the barrel. I think most other managers would also default to picking Henderson in their squads too.

Phillips has started 4 England games since 2021 so its not like he's really getting much preferential treatment either.

I wonder if those same people slated Pep for not picking Foden for most championship league matches last year, the only game he started after the groups was the final and he got the hook after an hour in that.

Don't get me wrong, he's a fantastic player, but it's only recently that he's really started to put the consistency into his game, and Southgate has regularly picked him before and after that point. He's become another ridiculous stick to beat southgate with. Whatever southgate does, the same actors in the media will pick an angle to beat him with and the same sheep will pick that up and run with it.

I'd agree that the problem with removing Henderson is that we have a dirth of central players of the right quality and experience to replace him. In an ideal world we'd put Henderson out to pasture, but it's not ideal.

Same can be said at LB where ideally we would dump Shaw and chillwell for being perma-crocks and have a more reliable player. But there isn't really one.

CB Maguire would be dumped but do we have an experienced quality replacement? Tomori has been poor for england, Dunk is old and lacks any big game experience, I think we have a lack of defensive depth everywhere but RB. Even CF have any of Watkins, Toney, or anyone shown enough to be anything but a poor Kane backup?

We do have world class quality in those front 4 positions, but one injury and that starts to fall apart, and we're struggling elsewhere for depth in the squad.

I think it could be Howe, and I think it'll fall apart within a year

Carlo Anchelotti. Do we have an extradition treaty with Spain these days? Either way given Brexit it should be years before Spain are able to extradite him.
