5 changes from Steve Bruce today

Jermaine Jenas on Newcastle United and Steve Bruce

Speaking on BBC 5 Live, former Toon midfielder Jermaine Jenas spoke about the current issues at the club.

Asked about the Chronicle poll in which 95% of fans said they wanted Steve Bruce to go, he said: " [He got] 95 per cent? He will take that five per cent right now.""

When asked if now is the time to change coach, he said: "We probably are but it doesn't guarantee anything.

"My argument for Steve Bruce, and Newcastle fans have been having a go at me all season for defending Steve Bruce, and the only reason why I defend Steve Bruce is because he can only work with what he has got.

"The players he brought to the football club in [Ryan] Fraser and [Callum] Wilson were very good signings and I think bringing Joe Willock on loan was very good business as well.

"Wilson has been injured far too many times during the season and Allan Saint-Maximin has been injured too much of the season as well so the key components of his side have been injured all season long.

"There is no doubt that I have watched a lot of games where I felt I can't watch this and that is where I massively sympathise with the Newcastle fans.

"They will be screaming from the top of the hills that they will take Eddie Howe but this team, not the football club, would be battling relegation no matter what.

"That is the make-up of the side and there are some very good teams down there.

"Being a player, I have been at a football club where it is all doom and gloom and the manager is getting stick week-in, week-out. When we were at Spurs with Juande Ramos there just came a moment where it was getting a bit much and he was probably coming to the end.

"That change lifted things and I felt sorry for Juande at the time but he ended up going to Real Madrid!

"That moment has probably come for Newcastle fans but it doesn't necessarily guarantee it will change anything."

Jose Mourinho on Newcastle United

"I expect a team wanting to win the match.

"Or at least trying to get a point because at this moment - for every team - a point sometimes can be very important.

"I think they are a difficult team to play against so of course I expect a difficult match for us.

"Newcastle need points for their fight."

Steve Bruce shakes things up with five changes - Newcastle United team news

Newcastle United named their team ahead of the visit of Tottenham

* With the moribund collection of chipped old tools and misfits - Steve Bruce has changed the team like rearranging deck-chairs on the Titanic.
* Our cousins - the " 8th biggest Club in The World" (!!!) are sinking again.
* Bruce says hes not "walking away" but a its worth the flack from media and fans for the wedge when he gets paid off.
* Below it says theyve "watered the pitch" - its hard to imagine what else they could do to improve their "performance" against Spuds today.

The pitch is watered ahead of the English Premier League football match between Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce made some big changes to his line-up for the home clash against Spurs.

The Toon boss started with Sean Longstaff in the engine room and restored Dwight Gayle to his attack.

Matt Ritchie, Jacob Murphy and Emil Krafth also started but there was no place for Ryan Fraser, Joe Willock or Ciaran Clark.
Isaac Hayden is out for the rest of the season after an injury at Brighton.

And Allan Saint-Maximin had to be content with just a place on the bench with Callum Wilson not deemed fit enough to start.

Dubravka, Murphy, Krafth, Lascelles, Dummett, Ritchie, Shelvey, S Longstaff, Almiron, Joelinton, Gayle

Subs: Darlow, Clark, Lewis, Manquillo, Hendrick, M Longstaff, Willock, Anderson, Saint-Maximin
