Evening all not football related but I'm looking for a new jacket for winter and with so many makes out there I'm looking for recommendations, my old North face has about had it. Needs to be warm and waterproof for walking budget around £150. Cheers

If you can up it to just under £200 Binns or House of Fraser are selling off Barbour coats and jackets at a genuine 30% off, most are selling about £196. Total bargain for quality Barbour coats.

Barbour are very good quality and as stated Debenhams are 50% off on loads of stuff. Just ordered two pairs of Loakes at half price. So no holiday and no trip to see the family but I will have some lovely new shoes.

Thanks for the responses but was looking for recommendations on Jackets not where to buy them from. Thanks
That all depends on what walking you do.

Is that walking the dog or serious walking up in the hills ?

For serious walking I prefer separates - warm & waterproof layers (or detachable / 3 in 1). That way you can remove a layer when you get a bit warm or when its not raining. Never gone wrong with Berghaus, warm fleece layer and a GORE-TEX water proof/wind proof/breathable outer layer. If you can push the budget a bit Millets have this in their sale.

Looks a good jacket did have a 3in 1 North Face which a found useful

I have that in black, excellent quality, comfortable and very warm - probably the best coat i've owned, prefer it to my berghaus.

It was reduced to £135 downstairs in sports direct a few months ago (USC or whatever its called now?) - opposite house of fraser. They probably still have them.

Over your budget but i also have this in blue, cracking coat - https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15898423/paramo-pajaro-men-s-waterproof-jacket-15898423

I've bought a few Rab coats from Go Outdoors, all of them have been/ are awesome. GO have had a big sale on too, so been some bargains. Also Berghaus gore-tex jackets are good, as is anything by Gore. I like Salewa too, good gear and always something on sale in go outdoors.

If doing serious walking multi layers is best, but I don't find it as comfortable as a t-****/ base layer and a decent coat.

I'm not going to bother with buying more North Face or Barbour again, not for walking/ features, they both seem more like fashion brands to me.

For Warmth - Lands End duvet jackets. I deliberately do not test them in the wet.

For wet - I've yet to find anything better than Keela's Munroe jacket I've had mine for 15 years You can wear down inside it. I live in the Yorkshire Pennines and am surrounded by reservoirs. We have over 60 inches a year rainfall that's easily twice what you get around Teesside Imagine over 300 rain days a year

Combination - Buffalo every time but be careful if you bulge at the front some of them are prone to zip problems. Nothing wrong with the jacket it is the problem with your shape. I know I suffer from it too

Cheers that's what is putting me of North face they seem to be more for fashion now than useful

Yeah, they deffo seem to be going more and more that way. Our lass got a North Face jacket as she thought she was "outdoorsy" (she's not), but even she can now realise that her Rab jacket and other gear which may not look as nice, is about 100 times better.

I swear by Berghaus, there is an outlet shop at Dalton Park which is great. I got a Berghaus XTrem down jacket for warmth a few years back, it was £100 down from £300 (genuine saving) and i'm yet to be cold in it, tested down to -15 in Iceland on the hunt for the Northern Lights in January. It is hydro-down so okay if you get caught in a shower but wouldn't want it to get soaked through.

Also have a Gore-Tex shell waterproof, a body warmer and multiple mid layers, I much prefer to layer up rather than have one big jacket these days but the down comes in handy in exceptionally cold and dry weather.

Heard good things about Rab also as mentioned above, North Face is a bit more style over substance at the moment but there high end stuff is good.

If I was going to push the boat out, I'd go for Arc'teryx but that's very hyped at the moment.

I have a montane featherlight down jacket which is fantastic, so warm and light. Not waterproof but will withstand a shower, I have a lightweight waterproof berghaus in my rucksack to throw on over the top in really wet weather

I’m a keen photographer so find myself in some remote areas and cold areas .Also walking to these areas over a couple of miles sometimes. I wanted a jacket that I knew was 100%waterproof and breathable. I did a lot of research and ended up buying a Snugpak Torrent. It’s super warm, has lots of soft padding, armpit zip vents, big pockets and a removable/ storable hood. Snugpak is not well known but military folk know about them so if it’s good enough for the military, then I know it’s good enough for hobby walking stuff. You can get it off eBay for £120 or pay more online. You won’t find it on the high street. I’m 5’10” , 44 chest and a bit portly so XL fits perfect.
