New Book on Boro Season 96/97

We could fill a book of 'if only' Boro moments

The earliest I can recall is going back to 1947 in an FAC QF at Burnley with the scores at 0-0 we scored a goal at Turf Moor which was cancelled out due to a player, not interfering with play but ruled offside

We ended up losing 1-0 & our 1st chance to reach the SF gone

On the positive side we did win a major cup in 2004 and had a bit of luck with the penalty taken by Zenden.

I am still proud of what we did in the UEFA Cup in 2006. The smallest place to reach a European Final and to knock out some Champions League regulars on the way tougher that the cup runs of 1996/97 for me.

My book arrived this afternoon and tomorrow I am going to sit in the garden and read it.

Due to it being hot tomorrow and me being a ginger skin, I will be smothered myself in suntan cream.

I’ve been sat in the garden since lunch and have just finished the book.

The book doesn’t tend to answer the questions we all have but to bring up more. What if we had addressed the defence/goalkeeper earlier and what if Skippy hadn’t broken his leg.

The big question for me is would we have been relegated if we went out of one of the cups and weren’t fighting on 3 fronts?

We will never know and I am only glad I was about for the rollercoaster ride.

When I finished the book the wife asked ‘how much did that cost you, not the book, the season.’

A lot of money, it seemed as if we were traveling forever

It was my first year as a student so I didn't see that many. I did pick some good ones though. Caught the good form at the start of the season. Saw the juninho game at Leicester, the QF win v derby. Queued for hours to get league cup final tickets. Missed some really big games too though, and to make matters worse I was living in Leicester.

We got all the way to the edgeley park car park, only to turn around and head back.

( and we had to pay again for the re arranged game)

Norman the following season they brought out penalties to decide, we had the best penalty shoot out at one time, not that we'd have won that the players would have been on a downer after such a very late sicker ounch

But my question is if it were introduced that season it would have freed up one less game, one less free travelling for the players, you never know a bit more rest time for the players & less cash for us to spend

I went to every game and produced a fanzine for every home game and the cup finals, sometimes actually working 24 hours, once doing that three times in a week. By the last few games I was exhausted with the stress of it all and ill. I wonder what it was like to be a player or involved at the club.

You did well there Rob, wasn't the Leicester Wembley cup final the 100th A3 fanzine?

Nope - we did the 100th for Boro v Norwich when we were relegated from Premier League under Lennie Lawrence. I should not say "we" because Nige Endy did all of that while I did One Giant Leap - he somehow managed to produce an A3 version which was amazing given the technology, or lack of it.

That is the one. Amazing that Nigel did practically the whole thing himself, typing, lay out, cartoons, editing, lots of the writing, the cover I think and none of us had ever done anything in A4 before which was scary in those days.

After all those years I still can't believe we didn't win against Leicester.
Remember singing super super rav and then the impossible happened, never felt so distraught after a game before or after.
