Net Zero/Fracking.

A week or two ago Nigel Farage began taking a few tentative steps toward forming a Anti Net Zero movement. Today, his movement 'Vote Power Not Poverty' seems to be gaining momentum. With the slogan net zero is net stupid, Farage and his right wing friends are promoting the return of fracking and coal mining.
They aim to force a referendum on the issue of Net 0.

Can we really afford to stall any longer?

More on twitter.

Wish he would just f-off, hate the man. Essentially blaming a rise in gas/oil prices on renewables. Fracking doesn’t work in a country as densely populated as ours, and coal mining? Give me a break.

have seen all the usual "I SUPPORT TRUMP" profile image types (with union jack, poppies, some witty slogan about "loonie" lefties etc forming the others) posting farage's ***** on FB lately in groups

Particularly worrying for this region which recently was positioned on the front row of the grid with regards to Net 0 and hydrogen technology.

True. Let us just continue to pay through the nose for US gas and Australian coal. Ridiculous.

I'm not against fracking, if it can make up some of the gas deficit that we will need due to Russia etc, but if it's going to take as long to do that, as it would to get more renewables then renewables are of course a better answer. Wind Farms can't/ won't be made as quickly (not offshore anyway), and I reckon the price of solar might go up as there's going to be more demand for it. If every EU nation is thinking the same thing then panel demand (and turbine/ blade demand) will be higher than supply.

The environmental aspects/ studies of putting a solar farm/ wind farm on land, as well as the local consultation take years though, and I can't see how we fast track those without ignoring the public (which I'm fine with, as energy is more important than peoples views), but there could be more danger to the local environment, by not taking time and doing the right tests and searches etc.

I expect the fracking to be much quicker mind, and if it is, it would certainly need to be a short term stop gap (and at the suppliers expense, not the publics), and not hinder the progress to net zero.

I agree, up to 'not hinder the progress to net zero'. Was this written a month ago? If they don't focus on the immediate danger, there may not be much left of the planet to save.

Also it's just a pity that Farage had to claim this issue.

So you don't think we have to progress towards not zero? Huh?

How do you know that Fracking does not work in a country like ours? Farage was a one issue politician who quite rightly was destroyed every time he tried to make parliament. I put him in the same category as Tommy.

It's either fracking or Nuclear, or as I prefer a sea based wind farm from Berwick to Dover. There are ills in each of them.

Yeah, that's a fair point, but I did kind of meant that anyway, just didn't explain as well.

Keeping people warm/ alive and not in energy poverty is more important for next winter, and the winter after that, than the world getting too warm.

But if we end up with more emissions over the net zero line, then we should have to agree to claw that back.

Obviously if we can get the renewables on board quicker we could even speed the net zero up, but having worked in the utilities game, every project we do is a long long time after planning, land purchasing (probably compulsory purchasing), EA approvals, ground investigations, public consultation etc etc. We would need to rip up the rule book on a lot of those, or put in some sort of directive where the public and construction/ utility companies have to prioritise the energy sector, rather than the economy/ construction/ growth sectors. It would be expensive, but has to be worth it long term for energy confidence, and for the planets health. It would also get us away from Russia, which is also better for the planets health, and Russia is currently probably posing more risk than climate change would. A nuclear winter is more damage than fossil fuels could ever do, and there's a small chance of that this year but the chance grows the longer we're reliant on Russian energy, as this creates GDP, and a percentage of that goes on defence (attack) etc.

I'm all for ripping up the rule book, and throwing the planning, consultation laws largely in the bin, they've been holding us back for too long anyway.

Farage is a fool, but a broken clock can be right twice a day, for a short time. He might have a point about fracking or energy independence, but it's not for the right reasons. He's against net zero, and wind farms and "doesn't believe in climate change" etc, and had we been pushing for more of these renewables prior we wouldn't be in so much of a mess. It's the same with Trump, he's a fool too, on the same topic, but it's a lesser problem for the US as they can be energy independent, practically instantly (but this cuts our supply also).

It would take a decade to design and build another nuclear plant, never mind agree where to put it, and that's without any public consultation/ checks/ red tape etc.

Fracking is pretty much ready to go (or would be sooner than renewables I expect), albeit with it's own consequences, but those consequences are nothing compare to being reliant on Russian gas. We can't turn off the gas yet, so we do need a stop gap, even if it's partial.

Clearly not content of making the lives of millions harder in his own country with his push for Brexit, he now wants to assist in destroying the planet. Nothing people like that wont do for a bit more publicity but who are the idiots still listening to him?

If it comes out if his mouth you know it's verbal dross.
