Neil Warnock on Leo Percovich,Woodgate and coaching at Boro

That reads as very patronising to me. Having said that NW seems a genuine bloke and doesn’t strike me as the sort of person to ‘hide’ a message or be patronising. If he thought Leo wasn’t required he would say so I’d imagine, and he’d be gone by now. I’d also be surprised if he allowed Gibbo to force coaching staff on him, he’d just say ‘no, that’s not how I work’. I still think Leo will move on though or if not may revert to gk coach role.

Edit: and yes it know Blackwell was a gk and gk coach previously under NW.

Doing no-one any favours having Woodgate lingering around like a bad smell and that includes Woodgate himself. If he's serious about management he'll go somewhere else, wherever he can get a job or as a proper number 2 for a bit.

If Gibson thought he was ready for management then surely he's learnt everything he can from working at the Boro. Surely pointless to go back to working with the youth teams etc? Needs to get out of his comfort zone I'd suggest.

Let's see how serious he is about it.

He's complimenting Leo's attention to detail and states that the other coaches get on well with him. The substitute coach bit just sounds like he's making a general throw away comment/joke/observation.

Woodgate needs to be away for his own future, he can be a decent manager though he needs space & time to learn... if I was him I'd be asking to go with an eye for proving myself elsewhere & maybe coming back the real deal & leading the club forward or even bigger clubs*

*other clubs may have larger fan base, more trophy history & richer owners.... however Boro is always #1.. just to clarify..

Any football manager who thinks the league table tells lies will never make a football manager. He has shown nothing to suggest that he has any sort of future in the hot seat.

Jesus we owe Woody nothing . What’s this fixation with not hurting anybody’s feelings . It’s a dog eat dog profession .
Woody needs to walk away and reflect on his tenure , learn from it and start again with a lower profile position elsewhere .You can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear . If you haven’t got it YOU HAVENT GOT IT

Exactly. We are far too sentimental.

Thanks for posting this as I'd not seen it before.

I'm sure it wasn't his intention but is there just me that thinks that Warnock's quotes about Leo come across as slightly patronising "specialist substitute coach"?!

I must admit given the body language on the bench in the end of season games I thought Leo might be on his way this summer, but this would suggest not.
I would agree plus surely he needs a more defined role maybe not with the first team?

Its been said but it is so true Woody came in too early, most of us supported him, but we were shocked/surprised with his appointment. He is not Jack Charlton and he did not have the funds that Bryan Robson had or Steven Mac or Aitor or GS. It even now feels a bit cruel for Gibson to do it, like sending keen boys into the front line of a major battle. For Woody what does he do look at jobs in the National League or be a number 2 at a Championship club or work with the under 23s at Boro. Myself I would go abroad and be a number 2 type at a biggish club, but it might be difficult domestically and there are language issues. A number 2 will give him time to reflect, learn more and apply to some degree to make him a better future manager. Going straight back into management at a lower level there is no time you carry the can 100% and you can do a good job and be sacked like Higgy at Pools but good is not good enough. Woody has time on his side to slowly build up his CV.

I remember I was working with a Wolves fan in 1986 on the South Coast he told me that a young Brian Little in his late 30s did a good job with Wolves as manager for a couple of months and was sacked unfairly in his opinion. Wolves were in a financial mess and were in was is now Division 2 and so they didn't have a bean. Brian went to Boro as a coach to Bruce Rioch with us in what is now Division 1. It was quite a step down. He did get the Darlo manager's job and did well there and I remember him managing Villa in the Premiership. The Wolves job came too early, bit he back tracked and built up his experience and ending up a Premiership manager.

I don't think Woodgate would get a job anywhere else to be honest. He only got the Boro job because he was a local lad.

I'd like nothing more than him to go down the leagues and to give it a go and earn the right

Hartlepool? Darlington? I can't see him going abroad.. but maybe he should. Maybe he should be knocking on Karanka’s door at Birmingham?
