Bryan Robson - an enormous success and changed the club forever. another ex player was mentioned that we were looking into.. ex Chelsea maybe?

Steve McClaren - stepped into the fold post Robson and delivered our first European jaunt and our first trophy. Anyone else in the mix?

Gareth Southgate - took the job after a German manager wanted to bring in all of their own staff.. Felix Magath?

Gordon Strachan - kinell, haway man.. he can't have been our only option here ffs!

Tony Mowbray - may well have been our only option! can't imagine anyone else being in the mix.

Aitor Karanka - sergeant strops a plenty was our first foreign manager, Victor Orta wanted to bring in David Wagner in the January?

Garry Monk - got the job ahead of Nigel Pearson.. cant believe he hasn't managed us tbh

Tony Pulis - mention of Harry Redknapp on a temporary deal.. we drew the short straw.

Jonathan Woodgate - cant imagine anyone else being in the mix. tough if not impossible job.

Neil Warnock - hero of the hour, a very specific set of skills. there can be no other.. can there?

Chris Wilder - built on Warnock's foundation.. then stunk the place out. total todd warrior.

Michael Carrick - the right choice.. but Rob Edwards was mentioned for a while.

Who have we missed out on? opportunity missed or bullet dodged?

Martin O’Neil
Felix “Penfold” Magath
Guus Hiddink….. 😁
Bobby Robson - linked in 94, as was Souness
When was Martin O’Neil?
Bobby Robson would have been pretty smart. Souness is another like Pearson that I think should have managed us at some point.

Martin was before Southgate. Wanted to bring his own backroom staff in but Gibson thought we had a perfectly good backroom left by McLaren. Unfortunately they were all gone in around six months of Southgate taking over so we may as well had O'Neil.

Wasn’t it widely known that we wanted him in 2006 and interviewed him at the same time as Penfold but he turned us down?

Bill Shankly. We turned him down. It is not impossible to imagine that it might have been us and not Liverpool achieving under Shanks. Both clubs were in the 2nd tier at the time.

I don't think it was a simple case of us just turning him down. I read Shankly's own account and it involved shenanigans at boardroom level of different clubs which we weren't party to. I'll try and find the article.

If Robbo turned us down in 94 it would have been Souness.
