National Rail Strike

and thats the 'great money trick' - go read the book - 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist' by Robert Tressell - explains it all.

better still get your kids to read it when they become teenagers- so that they know and understand from an early age.
Explain it in a nutshell for me?

I want rid of this government and a better way of going about things for me and my family just as much as everybody else. But me going on strike with no union representation and bills to pay isn't going to work is it?

How did we get to you going on strike?

I was given a copy of The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists for my eighteenth birthday. I have since carried on the tradition and given a copy to my eldest two on their eighteenths and my youngest will receive one this year. Everyone should read this book.

(Although I think a lot of people are put off by the title - “You what? Eh? What’s that about then? - plus the fact that it’s a bit of a weighty tome).

Supposed to be going to the RAH on Tusday evening to see Yes play the Close to the Edge 50th anniversary tour. Rail strike and tube strike means I wont make it.

Anybody wondering why the railway is going on strike and whether it’s justified, it’s worth watching this clip of the RMT boss on Ridge on Sunday this morning. Perhaps we’d all be better paid if all Union bosses were a bit more like this guy -

Unfortunately they're rarely given a platform to do what he's done there. She'll be getting a rollicking for that.

Ahh the good old Tory policy of hating the lefty-unions..we've had the war against immigrants, war against benefit scroungers, war against remainers...now it's good old union bashing. Tory rule is divide and conquer. Always have been, always will be.

The major difference is that the Rail Union is not led by the most inept Union Leader of all time. Scargill had the good grace to tell Thatcher a year before…..

After the “Who rules Britain” speech by Heath, the consequent Labour win. The Tories began the planning for the breaking of the NUM in1977, while still in opposition.
If it’s still available read The Ridley Report. It contains a full blueprint of exactly what was to, and did happen.

I will have a read, thanks.

Scargill completely played into Thatcher's hands. Before him, I think Joe Gormley had the government in his pocket and put his members first.

Roughly the same time was a Trade Union Leader known as Red Robbo, he knew how to fight and win. The Tories and the papers despised him. This Rail Union Leader reminds me of him

The Tories always find someone to demonise the, Eco warriors, single mothers, unemployed, and anyone who is not a tory

Interesting reading that Ripley Report that at the time the nation could only survive a Rail Strike for 4 weeks.

Some of the ideas in that report are scarily accurate, i.e the planning of a miners strike

Report here if anyone is interested - Ripley Report

Thanks to @Ziggy for flagging it up

Watch: Grant Shapps admits he didn’t meet RMT over strike and his excuse is pathetic

"If Grant Shapps spent as much time negotiating with the RMT as he does touring around news studios, then we might not have a rail strike today."

Train passengers are being hit by major disruption due to the largest strike by rail workers for a generation.
Usually busy stations such as London Euston were nearly deserted except for picket lines by union members early today, with the start of services delayed until 7.30am.Only a fifth of trains are running, half of lines are closed, and the network will be shut down at 6.30pm.The general secretary of the RMT union has accused Transport Secretary Grant Shapps of “spouting nonsense” with plans to allow agency staff to step in for striking workers.
But could it all have been avoided if the Grant Shapps had bothered to speak to the union bosses? Well, not according to Grant.

Untrained staff

It comes as Mick Lynch criticised the proposed change in the law, which would allow flexible workers, including agency staff, to cover for those on strike.
Mr Shapps said the legislation change could be introduced within months.
Mr Lynch told the PA news agency: “Well, I don’t know how bringing in untrained, non-safety critical, inexperienced workers into a dangerous environment like the railway – with high speed trains, there are high voltage distribution systems, there are rules and regulations that have the power of statute – how that will help anyone, whether they are a passenger or a worker or manager or whatever?
“I don’t see how the use, the deployment of students or people who have got no work experience that are working for an agency will help anyone to resolve this situation, so as usual he’s just spouting nonsense given to him from some policy unit which doesn’t help to resolve the situations which are in front of us.”

Shapps

Shapps appeared on BBC News this morning and was asked: “When did you personally, Transport Secretary, speak to the RMT that called this strike?”
He replied that he did not meet with them, because ‘it’s a red herring.’
How do you know if you never went Grant?

The RMT responded with this:
It is not a red herring Transport Secretary, it is literally your job!#ToryRailStrikes https://t.co/ZPJhmY4RxU

Also during the interview, Shapps was held to account for not getting involved. John Kay read out a contract which the Tories made, handing themselves power over industrial action on the railways and how everything they do must go through Grant Shapps.
