Naples

Just found out my flights to Barcelona at the end of the month have been cancelled. Currently looking at alternative locations and have found some good flights to Naples for the same dates. Has anyone been before and has anyone got any recommendations? It’ll be for 3 nights.

From looking into it, the general consensus seems to suggest avoiding Naples on the whole. Might just go to Edinburgh instead, as one main reason for Barcelona was the flight times meant we’d get nearly 4 whole days, but just can’t find anything else as good.

Oplontis, Villa Poppaea,
Two stops before Pompei ( from naples) superb site. Its pool looks better than some I've seen on hol. Rough area but an absolute gem. Recomended to us by a history Don we met on the train.
Stayed in the Cesare Augustus in Sorrento, good location for the center , clean. Roof pool, Do take a boat day trip on the amalfi coast but DONT Drive any where🤯
BTW Villa Poppaea is a Roman Villa ( Caligula's Mams) not a Hotel!

From Naples you can get ferries to Capri, Ischia and Procida which are good days out, the second two can be done on the same day. As above trains to Herculaneum and Pompeii as wel. The harbour area around the castle is nice on an evening I stayed in a hotel opposite. The city centre is quite rough and can be ropey especially at night make sure the Mrs isn’t kerbside when walking as a fair few bag snatchers flying around on mopeds.

See Naples and die

The beautiful bay and some great sights to see with Vesuvius over shadowing it all.
Herculaneum
Pompeii

etc

Naples is one of roughest places I've been. We bought train tickets at the station and as we were walking away the guy on the counter called us back and asked my wife to take her earrings out as people had been ripping them out to steal them.
Sorrento and Amalfi Coast is wonderful and well worth a visit.

Not sure on current Covid levels, travel restrictions etc cos I'm not planning anything this year, but Slovakia, Slovenia and the Baltic States are good trips.

naples is probably both the worst and one of the best cities I’ve visited…
like said, don’t get a taxi if you’ve got a weak heart, or do, if you’re looking for a thrill …
don’t go down by the docks, I had to as it was where we docked…
do get a pizza, look at the programmme wher Gordon, Gino and Fred visited and go to that pizza shop…
also, I was there in 94 during the World Cup and they were crazy for it.. probably a lot changed since then…
go to Pompeii or heracleum (sp) get the train, they’re safe…

Been to maples a few times and never had any bother, we got chatting to a taxi driver there last time did us a few personal tours, amalfi drive etc.
Safe as most big European cities I would say, just need to use common sense

Thanks for the recommendations. Turns out my girlfriend can’t do the dates of the Naples flights, so we’re going to Barca still but from East Midlands. Quite intrigued to go to Naples in the future though…

Like Hull but with pasta!!

See if you can go to Verona .Stunning little city and day trips to Venice and Sirmione in lake Garda are only an hour away .
Venice, one of the most over-rated places in the world. Open canals/sewers, rats everywhere and rained the entire time we were there. Very near the bottom of my list of places to visit twice.

Open canals 😂😂 yes that’s kind of what it’s all about, fellers in boats with funny hats too. Been four or five times, stayed in Venice, not day trips, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Spotlesly clean and out of the main tourist area really good inexpensive restaurants. Mourano another gem.

If there is a negative it’s that it shuts at about 9.30pm when the tourists have buggered off. Never seen a rat there, but probably only spent about twenty days there in total so need to look harder.
