Motorhome holiday

I bought my Moho 6 years ago when mortgage finished, never looked back. Only done Scotland once, went as far up the west coast as Bunree, near Fort William and then across the middle via Aberfeldy (distillery) to Stonehaven and back down the east coast.
Been over to France and Belgium 3/4 times now, camping jeugstadion is 10 mins walk from the Menin gate and reasonably priced.
I love the idea of having one but the costs seem wild even for stuff that's getting on a bit. It makes holiday ma cheap to go on but I feel like I could have some pretty good holidays for 30-40k 😂

Yes the 90 day rule is proper pain for someone who wants to do a long term Europe tour.
Boils my pee.

That and the fact that some lucrative O&G work in the many suppliers in the EU, notably Italy, Germany and Austria, has also completely dried up. Many of them in fantastic places.
Anyone who voted out is a complete fkwit and anyone that says it's been a success is a lying complete fkwit.

One thing I took from doing a motorhome holiday was that you're moreorless driving a huge wallbrick on wheels that drinks fuel like you wouldn't believe.
But it was a fun thing to do and the family loved it

Yeah I cried filling the tank up 😂

We had 2 elderly cats, brother and sister and one died after we'd looked after him for a year due to an illness so we'd had no holidays especially with Covid and all that so we did the NC500 as our first "break" away, and took her with her to make some final memories with her as she was 17. We were worried how she would take to it but she loved it and everyone she came accross loved her.

Little cow is still alive now, trying to get another holiday out of us I think! Half a year to 20 year old now 😂

Struck me how great some of the beaches on that route are, look like something you'd expect in Spain. I'd also go outside of midge season too.

Some pics;

I'd love that, but from a quick browse a few month ago automatics were very few and far between and the price shot up. Also i mailed one place in Edinburgh and they said that i was able to leave my car there but it was at my own risk and they wouldnt recommend it, but as mentioned here i'd definitely want to collect from up there. Let me know how you get on

It's a good idea to hire the van from somewhere like Edinburgh/Glasgow as it will save you time lost in the van. I'm looking at spending some time up in Scotland in my van this year. The only word of caution is that the North Coast 500 can be like a procession of motorhomes and campervans (particularly through July and August) and it's quite a drive from Edinburgh to even get to the start! I'm looking to do some island hopping in the Hebrides particularly a pilgrimage to the home of Stornoway Black Pudding on Harris!
We did ours in May and found it the ideal time because weather was still really nice but the route was quieter and it was outside of midge season

The route being quieter was a godsend as even tho we avoided applecross, there was still a significant stretch of single track roads with passing points. If you're not used to driving a large vehicle it can be a bit hairy!

Firstly, wild camping is legal and free in most of Scotland. We love Dumfries and Galloway ATM but I'd also recommend anywhere around the 500 route. Applecross springs to mind but don't do the pass route. Dores village by Loch Ness is lovely and say hello to Steve (Nessy Hunter) who lives in his van on the shore. Port William and surrounding is lush too. Good luck!

What kind of MoHo do you have HV?

Oh she's an old lady now - an Excelsior. Still trusty but ever more expensive to keep on the road. Lovely to be in though.
Do you always feel like you are home and get a warm feeling when you get her out?

We have a touring caravan that we leave in storage abroad that we've had for around 16 years and it is like brand new inside - we bought it new and have looked after it. The outside faded and the odd thing needs replacing due to wear and tear (that's the hard part abroad) but I always feel like I'm home when I get inside it.

I have a friend who's a sound engineer and he's completely screwed by it.

Great hiking in D&G. A little like the Lakes. But without the hordes. Locals very friendly too, they still like tourists, partly as they desperately need the income.

I just can't decide what to do. I plan to go away for a month at a time or longer so want something that will be comortable but don't want anything too big that it's not easy to drive.
Been looking at it for a year now and been to look at lots of them in the flesh.

It’s something I always wanted to do and jumped at it when I got the chance. I love the freedom it gives me, I’ve visited places in the UK and Europe that I wouldn’t have dreamt of going to, some quite by accident. The way it’s worked out, I’d probably get near enough what I paid for it, the way prices have increased. Plus, I detest airports, flying and the thought of spending time in the company of *****d up geordies in Majorca 😂

I take mine out in the winter for a drive now and then. Always feel like going on an adventure.
Europe much better equipped for touring with motorhomes and caravans.
We had always toured in Britain until I got talking to a guy regarding touring in Europe. We gave France a go, halved the price we spent on campsites and more or less guaranteed good weather. I am always amazed how quiet the campsites are on a night, yet people will be gathered socialising around each other's tourer.

We were in France in June last year. Stayed at 7 sites and most expensive was £24. Most under £20.

Our old girl needs a bit of work before we take her out anywhere atm. Had a couple of winter trips last month and had a horror show with the leisure battery. Luckily it's under the bonnet in ours (some are in the cab). 4 in the morning, away in the borders we were awoken by a massive bang. My immediate thought was that someone had hit the van with a sledgehammer, but then came the smell of burning.

Turns out the battery had exploded - like, properly gone bang. Sides blown out and sulphuric acid splashed everywhere.

The AA man smiled wryly and said "Oh, now that's a good one!"
