The problem is often that journalists don't report the science correctly.

I'm just off out but if I remember there's a good source on twitter for some of the actual facts about facemasks and the virus.

The important thing to remember is that the virus doesn't exist in isolation and the facemasks prevent droplets containing the virus - not the virus by itself (as it doesn't travel without a medium).

Measuring the size of the virus and the holes in masks is meaningless outside of a lab.

Considering that the people refusing to wear masks are also the ones refusing to social distance, the idea that mask wearing leads to less awareness elsewise is largely moot, too.
