Most disapponting Boro Signings XI in the Premier League era

I see plenty of threads where people are talking about our best players, games, signings etc but don't recall seeing a worst XI. Personally, their could be any number of reasons why a player is disappointing - it could be that he was getting paid far too much, he didn't perform, or he was injured regularly etc. For what its worth mine is something like this:-

GK: Tomas Mejias

LB: Branco
CB: St. Ledger
CB: Phil Whelan
RB: Michael Reiziger

CM: Kevin Thomson
CM: Didier Digard
CM: Gary O'Neil

FW: Kris Boyd
FW: Michael Ricketts
FW: Mido

For clarification, I know some of these players were signed in the Championship so Premier League era simply means since the PL began. This team looks pretty awful I have to say.

That lad we signed the last time we were in the Prem. Wore cycling shorts and ran about like he'd won a competition.

Morning WeeGord, a cracking team there, not. IIRC I seem to recall when we signed Phil Whelan we got the transfer papers in too late & he remained in no mans land not able to play for either club till the following season

There are some absolute duffers in there but also what should have theoretically been some good players. Branco's pedigree was top class but he was far too fat and unfit, Reiziger had won everything and spent most of his career as a first choice at Barcelona but for me was a bit 'meh'... Mido had bags of talent but was a complete waster.

Afonso Alves over any other striker, closely followed by Kris Boyd. Others were terrible too but I didn’t have such high hopes as I did with these two.

You see I am in a minority when it comes to Alves because he was far too lightweight. However he still had a record of 1 in 4 for Boro (granted there were 3 against City) and most of the full season he was here, he was employed up front on his own which didn't suit him at all. When he did have another 'forward' on the field it was usually Aliadiere who was equally lightweight.

Ta for that. This discussion will probably help people in round 2 of the 12 day quiz Erimus74 and I are just setting up today - guess Erimus74's 12 least favourite players.

There is going to be some minimum number of appearances though. So not sure whether some of the names mentioned would have achieved that.

Yeah but Alves cost 12.15million, at the time that was an atronomical fee for us. I'd also argue that 1 in 4 isn't very good for a striker as expensive as him. Not saying he wasn't badly managed and the selling of Rocky et al didn't help him, but he was absolute rubbish the majority of the time.

And was he really playing with better players at Herenveen? A decent player would have shone in our poor team like he did in Holland.

I know what you're saying and as the record signing we all expected more. However, we recouped £7.5m when we sold him on so his net official cost was £5m in transfer fees. If we'd kept Rocky I have no doubt he would have scored more goals for us and to compare to say Kris Boyd, Mido and Ricketts I thought he was better than all of those for numerous different reasons.
