Morgan Rogers

I can see why the recruitment team brought him in, lots of ability, still very young and lots reasons to think he had the tools to go to the next level, maybe the PL.

His touch and control last night was excellent, as it normally is, he got away from a packed midfield time and again, but he also misplaced a few (seemingly) simple passes and lost possession once or twice in areas where he needed to be more careful with the ball.

But he has all the attributes and I like watching him play, he looks like a proper player.

Massive potential for me. Some have mentioned a loan to league 1, that wouldn't make sense to me, he's already shown he can play with ease at that level in the cup games, he needs the more challenging environment of the championship to keep progressing. For me the good thing is that his weaknesses can be overcome e.g.concentration around the basics.

Agreed. The fact he is scoring and dominating against lower league teams and has played most of his football at Championship level even before joining us suggests he’s already above that level and close to a breakthrough here.

Some crazy stuff posted on this thread. He is bang average. And who said his touch is always good hahaha??? The ball bounces off him. With a fully fit squad he is not where near the starting XI.

Another decent performance against lower league opposition and he's hailed as a supreme talent by some. Strange.

He’s very strong upper body strength he’ll be an absolute beast once he gets into a rhythm as he’s still young but the potential is there.
He's fairly strong, but if that lad hits the gym for the next year I think he'll be a beast, I think he is still filling his body out, still growing. Give him a but more explosive strength and he'll be lethal

I get your point, but he’s actually closing in on 100 career apps 😮
He's started 45 champo league games, but spread over 3 1/2 years.

But it's really about levels, 2,245 championship minutes, about 25 full games, much of that was out of position as a CF here and at Blackpool, he's far from experienced at this level, far from the finished article.he's halfway between Van Den Berg and Hackney for championship minutes

This thread reminds me of the one a few months back where fans were raving about Barlaser and comparing him to Zidane.
I thought Rogers was sloppy tonight and frequently lost possession. I was honestly bemused when the commentator talks about him being a cut above the rest around 20 minutes in. Maybe I need to give up on football, because Rogers still looks far more likely to do an Ashley Fletcher than a Chuba Akpom to me.
Guess we all see the game differently, which is the beauty of the sport.
Hope the lad succeeds with us, but jury still very much out for me.

Yeah, I got it completely wrong with Rogers. Couple of games early on I felt he lost possession too much and I then probably kept looking for that negative side of his game and missed some of the positive stuff.
But yeah, hands up, I called it completely wrong and if you’d told me he’d soon be starting every week for Villa and scoring champions league hattricks I’d have laughed.
That said, even his biggest fans probably couldn’t have anticipated how quickly he’s risen to the top.
Fair play to the lad, and errrr yeah, hands up, I was completely wrong. Got to own it.

Sometimes it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

Clearly this was one of those times.

I think we all get it wrong at times with players, but it's so hard at this level in particular to judge. Consistency is the key that elevates players to the next level, and there's so many players in the champo with ability who aren't able to harness it and gradually fade away.
I don't think anybody expected Rogers to be doing what he's doing, certainly not at this stage anyway.
I liked Rogers, but he seemed to have a few glaring deficiciences in terms of his first touch and distribution, which was either brilliant or terrible. Interestingly he recently commented on this as an area he's still trying to sharpen up on. I wasn't sure until the last few games before he left whether he's be in our first choice line up, now he'd be our best player by an absolute mile.

Very true - it's also natural as fans to get swept away with hysteria and hyperbole. A 6/10 performance can become a 2/10 if it the teams struggling or we come out on the wrong end of a defeat, whereas a 7/10 quickly becomes a 9/10 with the player lauded as world class if we win and are doing well.

I was thinking this reading the gazette readings on saturday. If Morris and Ayling hadn't made a hash of that situation where they scored their 2nd then every player on the pitch would've probably scored higher.

Both good posts.
I thought people were getting a bit carried away given his best performances were in the league cup against lower league opposition. However, towards the end of his time he was also starting to show really glimpses of his ability in his league appearances and those who were championing him as a star were proved right.
The Villa move has proved incredible for him, right club, right manager and right system, at the right time. Long may it continue and I hope we make a tidy sum from any sell on clause that may get activated. Also, all credit to the lad cos he could have made the step up and struggled or suffered from stage fright but his trajectory has been phenomenal.

An odd feeling watching MOTD last night and seeing Rogers score a Champions League hattrick then Marten de Roon captaining his (brilliant) team against Barcelona in the very next match.
