Monaco interested in Latte Lath

“Boro have already bolstered their forward line this summer with the capture of Delano Burgzorg, who can play up-front, as a No.10 or off the left. They are keen on bringing in another centre-forward but only if they can strike a deal for a player who's been identified as their top target.

Wonder who the top striker target is then? I doubt it’s archer due to the finances involved

A 25 year old Championship goal a game player is a rare think indeed - £25m plus add ons for me.

At this stage I would just say he's not for sale.

Not sure that's quite true. We sold sold Rogers for 12 rising to 15m and since then bought Azzaz for 3m, Morris for 3m, Burgzorg for 2.5m, that young defender for 500k. so we've brought 12m in and 9m out so far.
I am pretty sure we wont spend £14m on a single player plus wages that make him such an outlier within the squad that it will cause problems. I would suggest that Archers wage demands would be more than the 4 players mentioned, combined. We just are not that club now. I’m not saying we wont spend all the money but it will be spent sensibly

That's the problem with bringing one player in on superstar wages. Let's say we signed Archer and offered him £40k/week, Scott's phone would be ringing off the hook from existing players agents asking what the fook is going on and wanting to renegotiate their contracts. It seems like there's a hard cap at the club on wages now and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, however it does mean we are always going to be open to having our players heads turned with PL money (or other top tier teams).
That is a better scenario than being lumbered with players who are being overpaid for 4 or 5 years.

It’s unlikely at this stage but not impossible. With football inflation it’s probably no different to Ivan Toney joining Brentford. It would only likely happen though if we got 25+ for lath. If we got less we would be more in the 8-10m and not prem wages market

I would be in total shock if we spent £14m on one player even if we sold one for £25m.

Outside the parachute period we have never spent more than £4.3m in the last 15 years on one player.

I think the market we’re operating in now is around the £2-3m mark for first team players, £500-£1m for more punty type signings.

We pushed the boat out for Latte Lath even at £4.5m - I think that’s about our top price we’d be paying.

Talk of paying £8-10m+ for players just seems totally unrealistic

I get that but I'd counter that with most of that time we were really poor at selling players for profit, it's only really the last 6 years we've done that. We don't need numbers anymore, we need quality. I agree it's unlikely to be 14m kind of figure, but I'd say that's down to the fact we won't be selling anyone for 25m this summer.

So that is apart from Downing and Rhodes when successfully aiming for promotion last.

Not an ITK at all but have some really good friends out in Cote D’ Azur who follow Monaco. They say locally fans have got quite excited about ELL. However they are not a super rich club and they are talking in the press about €8million with potential add ons to take the fee to €10 million. Seems way off our valuation but I imagine they hope unsettling ELL will be enough to push the deal through. Gibson will blow this out of the water.

€8m? That’ll get you his training gear.

I trust you have explained to your silly friends that they are very very silly indeed.

I tend to think that Gibson might sanction a big purchase in January if we're around the top 2. Right now, we're still spending at the top end of non-parachute teams but even though we have the P&S freedom to (mostly) compete with the parachute teams and Gibson does have the funds, we appear to be choosing not to.

I guess I look at our players and think, judging by last season, that we look good enough to make 5th-6th providing we don't have another injury metacrisis. On the other hand, if I were an Ipswich fan then last season I would have looked at their signings and thought we might make the playoffs if everything goes right. I would never have thought the autos was a possibility. Maybe the extra 12 months that Carrick has had and the momentum at the end of the season will carry us on the same way it did with Ipswich.

Have to say that right now I have no idea who we'll end up signing, if anyone, by the end of August. Didn't expect McGree to resign and thought we might be going for proven Championship ability. Now I'm not sure.
