Mobile Broadband

Anyone use it? We have really, really terrible fixed line broadband speeds (max download about 1.8Mb  - upload about 0.3) but we have an EE mast about half a mile away so thinking of switching and ditching. We already spend a small fortune on data for our phones. Can anybody recommend a decent router? Any pitfalls in this plan to be wary of? TIA

You lucky devil we're on 0.4Mb  (landline is like a string of sausages it's been chopped/shot and jointed that many times).

Next doors have got an EE router after I mentioned 4G broadband to them (my usual inertia means I've done nowt about it myself ) and can now watch Netflix and stuff.(y) They didn't need the outdoor antenna. Check out the indoor/outdoor coverage at your location on either the Ofcom or EE site.

Thanks... EE signal is strong as I facetime on an ancient Iphone regularly, and Speed checker when tethering to my laptop suggest I get 30Mb through the phone. Argos do an EE portable router.... that may be sufficient I suppose

I use this beauty with a BT/EE sim when I am on the road (which is much of the time). It's quick at home too.
Not cheap but if you have 5g in your area it's mega.

Yes, very tempting, but I expect we'll be in the last few % of the country to get 5g, if the 4G experience is anything to go by

Why not get a proper plan through EE direct?

I have a EE 4G WIFI mini that I use when I'm in France. I was able to watch the Boro games and the Lions Tour without any trouble. I can't remember how much data I get with it but it usually costs me £25 for 30 days (£50 in total).

I've been considering this for our place in Sweden. Seem to be some decent 4g routers on Amazon around 70 quid, just buy a SIM over there and top up when required.

Am I right in thinking that the EE router would be subject to EE roaming charges going forward (as it relies on a UK SIM)?

@changingman Check out Net ett (Net 1) in Sweden. They do "by the month" deals for people with summer houses. If you have coverage with them, they are a good option. We are lucky enough to have a mast right by us and, as we are only there a few months a year, it is perfect.

Nice one! Thanks, will check them out.

They might have been bought out recently. If you struggle to find them, pm me and I'll get the details of what/who/how we pay. The D-link router I linked to above is pricey but I a decent option as you can just get a Swedish sim for it (ie. it's not locked to a network).

Shame this isn't up and running: https://www.starlink.com/

But to go back to the OP: 30 MBp/s shoudl be enough for any streaming service. I use a netgear mobile router but it's only 4g. From what I can see 5g routers are eye wateringly expensive.

Just took out a Three 5G home broadband contract. £30 a month, with the first 6 months being half price, £65 cashback through Topcashback and a free 32" TV. I live on the outskirts of Leeds and the speeds have varied a lot over the couple of days of having it (2mbp/s - 120mbp/s). I've also since read some very mixed reviews and with working from home I can't take the risk so have decided to cancel the contract (free within first 14 days). Managed to negotiate a new deal with my old/current provider Virgin Media, which is consistently at 200mbp/s and they're doing it for £28 a month. Sounds like 4G / 5G broadband could definitely be a good option for you though and i'll look at it again in a couple of years once the infrastructure has had further investment.

Is it time that a basic wifi connection was made free to all homes?

During the first lockdown, I was amazed at how many kids didn't have access to the internet at home and we had to provide wifi dongles for them.

We live out in the sticks and as well as the EE mast nearby, we are tantalisingly out of sight from an o2 mast - so until mast sharing comes along we are limited to either EE or 1p mobile (which runs at about half the EE speed on their network). I think I might plump for a TP-Link or similar mid-price router and see how it goes. I'm slowly but surely knackering my (admittedly pretty ancient) mobile by constant tethering. There is Fibre in the local village and some properties just outside, but can't see it being with us for ages, if ever... 😖

Thanks again all - (y)

We used it before we had full fibre installed we only had fibre to cabinet & only got 24mbps but we got over 120mbps + on our phones we had a mast just up the road too. 2 boys both with Xbox & a wife working from home I got a tp-link archer 400 & an unlimited data sim for about £20 a month from BT mobile which is essentially EE it worked a treat handled the gaming & zoom calls no problem.
make sure you get unlimited data with your sim though if your going to use it as your main connection for the house you will soon go through it.
We Used to take it down to our caravan when we had it used it there too.
if your broadband is poor I definitely recommend it. 👍
