Millwall climb above us.....

After a home win over Leeds United. Millwall scored with five minutes to go to HT, and Leeds couldn't manage a reply.
Sunderland managed to drop another two points in less than a week, with a 0-0 draw away to Preston.
Stoke beat Blackburn, which did us a favour. Luton beat Cardiff and moved up to 19th.
It's West Brom home to Burnley tomorrow, so hopefully the Clarets will see off the Baggies. (y)

Luton are one of six teams on fifteen points!

Yes, played WBA. Burnley December 6th.
You get me wrong: it's their other results I’m talking about. West Brom are hard to beat, so a few poor results or draws will make it potentially easier for us. Burnley, doesn't matter when we play them. I'm talking about the bigger picture, not specific games.

In the championship teams go on great runs, roar up the table. Then the run stops and they plummet.

Look where Blackburn are. Look at Millwall.

It's a mental league.

We need to start putting a run together over 5-10 games. Plenty of other teams do it.

We need to get above West Brom.
Worry about Burnley later.
Why on earth would we want to allow Burnley to get a further 3 points clear, it makes no sense?

A draw would see West Brom still behind Burnley and Boro needing less points to overhaul Burnley.

We should be focussing on reeling in Sheffield again anyway.

Given how I think the season will pan out for both of those teams in the end (though of course opinions will vary on this) there's also the school of thought in my head that if we're aiming for the playoffs then we want the Baggies to get beat. Finish above them and we should finish in the Top 6 as they're likely to make it and are unlikely to finish lower than 7th.

If we're still aiming for the autos, then a Burnley loss MAY be better as if we finish above them there's a good chance we'll make it. Despite parting with Kompany before the season started I don't think they'll finish outside the Top 4 come season end.

However for hedging our bets on either around the top quarter of the table, then for the safest option the draw is the best result in terms of our points gained against the average of the others.

I don't think it's that mental: most of the teams are of very similar quality, and confidence, form and slight injuries can make a lot of sudden difference to results.

Forcing teams into the order of a league table tricks us into thinking the team in 8th is a lot better than the team in 21st, but that's not necessarily the case. If we had 24 identical teams, a league table would still force one of them to be top, and one to be bottom, but they'd still be of the same quality.

I agree with this to the extent that the league positions at the end of a year can sometimes be misleading, yet more often than not there's also a hefty points difference involved which say far more.
Though of course luck, especially with injuries as they often affect more than a single game, can also play a significant part in this also.

This is the 'alternative' league table I did at the end of last season.

Bascially, you can see the outstanding teams at the top and bottom, but basically 14 teams are covered by 14 points in the middle.
Boro, in 8th, were as close to Plymouth in 21st as they were to Southampton in 4th.

They are definitely punching. A bit like Sunderland as in spent feck all compered to many (including Boro ).

He's getting the absolute maximum out of a squad made up of loans / bargains and the odd seasond champ pro. I doubt they will last the course. You always know what you will get from them. If nothing else 100% and a hard physical match.

I actually don't mind Millwall. A local club with a local fan base. They have come a long way since the 80s. No pretence or fans watching the game through a phone whilst at the game. A 'throw back club'.

I did chuckle at the response to the light show the other night. Arguably the least Millwall thing I've ever seen 😂

Big picture........not just the next few weeks.
Goal difference, going to be critical in the run in.
Clear the ground before we go in..........(y)

Here's the scenario:

Other than crazy Watford [F:22 / A:22] no other team in the top ten in the Championship has conceded more than 16 goals. The top five clubs are in single figures, with Millwall on 12 in 6th spot. If we are going to challenge, we need to tighten up at the back and keep our free-flowing form going. We've found our scoring boots - scoring eight in the last four games, but conceded seven. Don't forget that after ten games, we had scored ten goals in the league. What I believe we need to do is snuck into sixth spot, cover our backs, and watch those above stumble and fall as the new year approaches. So long as we remain in or abouts where we are now, that's okay. Nobody is running away with it right now, so we don't need to worry. If we are in the same boat and haven't sorted our defence out by the end of January, it might then be a time to worry.

There we go, beat Luton by just the 9 goals on Saturday and we leap the pair of them before the International break, job done.😜 (Well, for saturday at least)
