Mike Dean

Why is he able to officiate Liverpool games? Isn't he a scouser? Albeit a tranmere fan it still surely shouldn't be allowed?

He looks like the skeleton of an eagle with skinned stretched over. Ego the size of Merseyside.

I admired Mike's decision to let play go on. It's becoming boring that so many players go to ground and hold their heads regardless of where their injury is, knowing the ref will stop play. Wasn't the Newcastle player treated for a leg problem eventually ?
Besides, it's a bit rich of Eddie Howe, the former manager of Bournemouth, the diving kings, to moan.

The dishonesty of players leads to this, as you say going down clutching your head when someone pushed you in the back or tripped you is endemic. I've always thought that a minimum treatment time of (say) two minutes would stop it completely. If play is stopped to allow treatment then the treated player has to leave the pitch and may not re-enter the pitch until that time has elapsed and only when the ball goes out of play.

Exactly this. 👍

As Muttley rightly said too, it is now endemic. Dean was spot on for me, we need ref’s to be braver in calling out cheating, but tbf, it is a hard call for them in the heat of battle. Newcastle were rightly punished through the goal, but more often than not teams get away with it.
I like Muttley’s proposal as a starter, but feel clubs need to be punished in other ways too where feasible, otherwise they’ll keep encouraging cheating any which way they can. I was amazed so many pundits felt Dean was wrong as it was clear from TV that there was no head clash.

He’s from the Wirral Its the equivalent of somebody from Hartlepool refereeing a Boro match.
Or someone from Sunderland refereeing a Newcastle match?

I thought it was unsporting to continue playing when a player appeared to have a head injury. But par for the course these days.

Still doesn't compare to the Derby vs Boro game many years ago, when we kicked out the ball because I think Cooper was injured, and when Derby threw in we stood around expecting the ball while they ran in and scored. 3-0 up and they took Boksic off with 15 minutes to go is my memory - ended up 3-3. Brilliant management decision. It was a while ago so perhaps my memory is wrong.

Part of the issue I suppose is that it's unsporting to pretend you have a head injury, or any injury really, with the intention of stopping the other team or having the game stopped. Unless the referee is certain it's a head injury then I don't think he should blow his whistle. I also think the FA should retrospectively punish players who pretend to be injured. You see players all the time, going down holding heads, knees and ankles when there has been little or no contact. There just isn't the will to do it, unfortunately. We had Ched Evans do it to Paddy McNair at the Riverside a few weeks back. He went down pretending he had a head injury, trying to get McNair sent off. The referee did nothing. He appeared to know what Evans was up to but didn't even speak to him about it. Instead we just had another 40, 50, 60 seconds of the game wasted while he laboured to his feet.

Back to the OP; I think Eddie Howe has bigger problems to concern himself with than Mike Dean, TBH.

Not sure there’s that much rivalry between Tranmere and Liverpool.
