I'm not sure I'd agree they were a shadow of their selves, we just made them look ordinary. The Serie A hadn't really weakened by the time we played them, and they'd finished 6th the season before, having won it a few years prior under Sven. It was a strong Lazio team with a top coach.Very very old. Don't even want to think about where I'll be in another 20yrs.
Remember the night so vividly. From someone who grew up watching Channel 4's Italian football coverage it blew my mind just to be watching us playing Lazio, nevermind comfortably beating them. I know they were a shadow of their former teams but still...
Was right behind Zenden's volley. In from the moment he hit it
Brilliant memories.Wow how time goes by so quickly. What great nights the European nights were. I’d never thought we would play teams like Lazio & Roma etc. Amazing.
I was going to say the same. Downing was unbelievable that night, totally unplayable. I remember Fernando Couto coming out that night saying he was one of the best wingers he'd ever played against (or words to that effect).Their right back, Massimo Oddo, was a seasoned Italy international, and 20 year old Stewy Downing absolutely destroyed him.
I think I was in the lowest ever crowd in the Anglo Italian Cup against… Ascoli I believe, think it was sub 4,000.Brilliant memories.
For anyone old enough to remember the Anglo-Italian Cup matches at Ayresome, that Lazio game was a pinch yourself moment.
