Middlesbrough v Chesterfield Replay 1997

The worst thing for me about Festa’s wrongly disallowed goal is that the next day when I watched the video of the match back and Des Lynam with all the pundits at half time they did the replay showing Festa was just onside and good old Des brushed it to one side and said, ‘yes he was offside wasn’t he?’ before quickly moving on to talk about how good Chelsea were.

I liked Lynam up till then.

The same day he did a shocking interview with Gibson, if I had been Gibson I would have got up and walked out.

The Festa FA Cup disallowed goal was the one they used on the BBC News a while after to illustrate the definitive report that proved that human beings could not judge offside correctly, so someone at the BBC had archived it as disputed at the time 😜 Mind you, the point of the report was that human eyes/brain could not process information fast enough to call offside correctly due to how fast modern players ran (I think they calculated 2 players level when the ball was kicked could be 8 yards apart by the time a linesman had worked out that he had to make a decision) and I don't think that was why Festas was wrongly flagged...

Thats how I remember it,I also never forgave Lynam, also remember when the second half started Motson said " I will say one thing the flag was very late"

I remember a Chesterfield fan clawing at the fence, shouting and spitting at us as we walked past. Although he looked ridiculous, I did have some sympathy because the common thought was that we'd robbed them.

It was immensely gratifying to see us beat their brains out though in the replay. I wonder where all those 30,000 or so they took to Old Trafford are now?
Probably not willing to fork out 20 quid for non league football and like myself and lots of Boro fans from back then, we've had enough of the rip off.

Unfortunately, I couldn't make the final but watched at home on the tele. I can't remember them showing Festa's disallowed goal at half time and haven't seen a replay of it since.
