Middlesbrough to Darlo train

Need to purchase in advance or from ticket office. Easiest way for me is to use an App eg Trainline to buy tickets and use the eticket facility.
Because there is a ticket office on the station I think if you try to buy a ticket on the train you risk being charged a penalty fare.

Always used to be buy a ticket on the train unless there was a ticket machine or booking office at the station you got on at. Long time (years) since I been on that line though.

Travel regular on that train
Conductor carries a ticket machine with him
Probably a third of people pay on train

It always used to depend where you get on. If Middlesbrough then you should have a ticket as it has a ticket office, but I think there are some stations where there is no office eg Allens West so you pay on train

Or has this changed due to the automated ticket machines?

Allen’s West has a ticket machine (not always working). But doesn’t matter where you get on, you can buy on train. I always buy on the train.

That’s my understanding
I used to live near Redcar East at the time there was no ticket machine.

I think as long as you get on where there isn't a ticket office or automated machine then you can pay on the train. You can pay on the train anyway but if you've got on at a station with tickets facilities the rules were change 3(?) years ago so that you aren't guaranteed to be able to buy the cheapest ticket on the train and can be charged a penalty fare.
This may be at the discretion of the conductor.

I have a Railcard and use the Northern Rail app to buy my tickets. Day return is very little more than single.

Nearly all station have ticket machines or ticket offices now, before you get on a train at one of these station you most have a ticket, ( physical or electronic) or have obtained a promise to pay ticket from the machine. If you fail to do this you are leaving yourself open to a fine. Just use the Trainline app👍

Edit
My daughter has been caught out by this twice since December and been fined both times

The OP is asking about a specific train journey on which it is common practice to buy tickets on the train no matter where you get on, without penalty.

I understand this and my son works at this station. The rules are you should always get a ticket or promise to pay before boarding this train. If you fail to do this you are leaving yourself open to a fine. If the conductor does not apply this always to you then that is his discretion but my daughter has been fined twice on this route as she travels to work in Darlington ( every weekday) for being in a rush and hoping to pay on the train.
She now pays for a season train ticket because of this.

It may be but the conductor is within his rights to issue a penalty fine to anyone who hasn’t bought a ticket in advance. Don’t give bad advice to people when you don’t know the rules of travel.
