Middlesbrough Squad

So upon the final whistle on the 22/07/2020 our squad will consist of the following for our new manager to ponder on:

Goalkeepers: Tomas Mejias, Dejan Stojanovic, Zach Hemming, Aynsley Pears

Defenders: Anfernee Dijksteel, Dael Fry, Nathan Wood, Marc Bola, Sam Stubbs, Djed Spence, Hayden Coulson

Midfielders: Marcus Tavernier, Marcus Browne, Jonny Howson, Paddy Mcnair, George Saville, Lewis Wing, Connor Malley, Ben Liddle, Hayden Hackney

Forwards: Britt Assombalonga, Ashley Fletcher, Tyone O'Neill, Stephen Walker, Rumarn Burrell

Unknown: George Friend, Marvin Johnson

Huge task with massive gaps to fill in a short period of time. Squad on paper is massively unbalanced and will need a lot of work and wriggle to get it fighting fit for the new season.

Big unit at the back. Midfield general. Big unit up front. Try and get Roberts back. Give Johnson a deal.
If we need to free up funds sell Britt, McNair, Saville.
Play Tav every game. If he plays badly keep playing him until he gets his form back.

You think clubs will have money to spend? Given the current playing field with Covid etc hammering the income? If we do indeed sell Britt, McNair & Saville its leaving us short in central positions also isn't it?

Will save us a lot in terms of salaries for those three.
Its a buyers market.
Shrewd recruitment and management and we can build a successful squad.
Brit has scored 10 goals all season.
Thats not a satisfactory return for his costs.
Im sure we can find an attacking midfielder or a winger who can score 10 goals a season - for less than 15M and 35K a week +?

Yeah i agree, just a question as unsure how teams will operate given the low income the last few month. We've already cut the wage bill and those mentioned by Sheriff will again reduce it more. There will be lot's of free's and loans available i should think and i believe the team that runs out for the first game of the season will be 90% unrecognisable imo.

Keep Spence, Coulson Djiksteel Howson, Tavernier (at all costs) and Fletcher. Add in some promising youth players and we need 9 or 10 at least to come in. Take big earners off the payroll and we might be able to give Warnock the ammunition he needs.

I’ve just spent about half an hour looking at potential signings to fill the gaps on frees up to about £1m price - it’s not going to be easy!

The most important thing is to recognise the talent we have and not waste it.
Tav Spence Coulson. Build the team around them.
We are in such a bad situation by not fully realising the talents of people at the club, as much as by spending big money on mediocre players.

We need to bin off marvin johnson, he’s a poor 1 good game in 5 winger and an utter liability as any sort of defender

I don't get talk about the squad been unbalanced. We may be a couple of defenders short but that's about it.

It's not unbalanced, it's just not very good.

Unbalanced meaning, do we have an all out right winger? Left winger? No. A lot of one dimensional central midfielders all doing the same role (Saville, Howson, Wing, McNair) One recognisable central defender (Fry). Do we know where Tav's best position is? Do we play him alongside Fletcher? Do we sit him in behind? Can he play out wide? Spence and Coulson are they natural right and left backs? Do we need to find a system to allow them to move further forward. Is Bola good enough to command left back? We seem to have bought similar players in similar positions and then the previous three managers (Pulis, Woodgate and now unfortunately Warnock) are trying to force square pegs into round holes. The squad needs a huge change up, mass exodus with players being bought to play a system not forcing expensive footballers into a shape hoping for the best.

Agreed, but he was injured for a period
Also who will pay him that amount in this climate?
If he's here we'll have to get behind him

Thing that amazes me about football is the best scouts and development people would cost a fraction of what the players and agents receive, yet the same clubs thrive while the rest flounder, investing £1m in the best scouting instead of agents is the way forward

Well spotted Atypical!
I`d almost forgotten about our non-league capture!
Its a condemnation of those responsible for "recuitment" when they can spend 15M on an average player, pay him ridiculous wages - whilst a lad who was wotking in a factory not so long ago - comes along and does a better job than him.
Wing is one of those players a special manager will turn into a good all round player.(y)

Morning.
I dont dislike the lad, but hes not much more than average.
Someone needs the sack for the money we`ve wasted on average players over the last 5 years.
I dont blame Steve Gibson - although he has to take some responsibility.
He obviously relies on the "expertise" of those further down the management chain, as to whether a player has the skills, attitude and ability to do the job required.
Recruitment has been dreadful for years.

Its like we have the money to get a tailored suit, but buy a more expensive one off the peg - then pay for it to be altered to fit!
Arze about face.
It has to change or we slide down the leagues and end up skint.
