Middlesbrough FC Women

It was your argument?

We're not going to miss out on any signings because we now have an affiliated women's team.

Almost every single club we'd be competing with for signings also has an affiliated women's team.

It's a strawman complaint.
Not arguing with anyone. Just pointing out facts. We only have one benefactor. Less money in his pocket means less money for the mens first team. However miniscule people think the sums are.

And it's his money not yours you plank, just as it's his team not yours - if you don't like, go and support a team that share your outdated and misogynist views

It's not difficult to understand why you don't want it, yes.

Sexism.
His logic is bollox anyway.

The amount of money we can invest is based on two things what Steve gibson chooses to spend and what ffp allows the club to spend.

Neither of these are going to be impacted by having a women’s team

I think we've been a great club in the community and long may it continue. However, I've seen the interviews and they are looking at getting into the women's super league. That won't come for free and I dont want any money taken from the mens football club for them to achieve that.not sexist. I just support the mens team and have no affiliation or support for the women's team. I hope they do well but they will never change my weekend mood like the mens team do because I don't support them
It's not sexist. I just want women to have no opportunities whatsoever.

That would be the second highest transfer fee in the history of women's football, so you've got a very warped understanding if you think that would be spent in the 4th tier of women's football.
What did Keira Walsh go for? £400k or in that region wasn't it?

Back in the 90s, I was always sure that PPV would be new way we would watch all sports, no matter how dull or boring the game, PPV has in many ways made the game what it is today, opening doors for people of all backgrounds and genders.

The year 1995, enter the women’s game— anyone can see how it has prospered on the international stage and while many will suggest it takes away from the men’s game it’s perfectly clear it has only had a positive impact—both financially and structurally.

Granted the women’s game isn’t the same as the men’s game, but let’s be honest women ain’t men regardless of the politically rhetoric and while the men’s game sets new standards in stadiums etc the women’s game can also add to the sport with other forms of athleticism that the men’s game can’t offer.

I’m of the opinion that the women’s game will only flourish now it has a platform to be successful. Moreover I’m sure it’s a welcome addition to all parents with daughters who now have an additional outlet for their children to grow and excel in professional sports.

Final note, the game hasn’t changed from a purist standpoint, we still kick the ball for 90 minutes and try to thrill the fans. The women’s game will only add more momentum to the sport and hopefully it will give kids of the female gender a boost to their career options. Kudos to MFC who have given women from all backgrounds a chance— it’s long overdue.

So you've followed the club to see the u21s etc do well. Obviously it's an added bonus but it's the first team you want to see successful. I just can't see anything advantageous to Middlesbrough fc mens team by having this link. Please inform me where this helps us, other than looking good to the press.
It makes us a better club.

We used to have a link with the womens team and that went away.. that did not improve the club in any way.

How many of you have been to watch them play regularly in the last few years?

They've been around a long time but has interest really increased when it comes to Boro women?

Their crowds at Bedford Terrace weren't particularly great, I'm not sure about last season with their move to Stockton?

Will you watch them now that they're under the MFC umbrella despite not being particularly bothered previously?

Good point, good luck to them but I have no interest.

Really excited about this. I've been a fan of women's football since the 2005 euros. We had one of the best players in the world (Kelly Smith) and one of the most exciting prospects (Karen Carney) but they were kind of stuck in a side full of amateur players. Since the WSL started, the game has come a long way (although some attitudes haven't).

I've been to see Boro play quite a few times over the years, and it's been very clear how much the money and facilities from the men's sides helps. They were up towards the top of the National Premier Division North one year, the got relegated to Division One the next. There's a lot of young talent that comes through the local area (Elyssia Boddy moved on to Leicester last season and the Reserves almost went a whole season unbeaten) and it'd be great to see the side moving up towards the Championship or the WSL.

I don't buy the argument that this distracts any way from the men's club. It'll bring more revenue for the club from games at the Riverside, will attract a different audience who don't like the atmosphere of men's games (I will say I preferred the atmosphere of the Euros and WSL/Championship games I've seen). And there are FFP allowances for women's teams to help encourage the men's sides to provide funding. But even if it didn't, this is a great move that a community club should be doing. I can't wait for the first game they have at the Riverside!
