They're not, but the London Evening Standard journalists are lazy and dont draw a distinction between mackems, geordies and Teessiders.

I really dont get why people get so annoyed about it to be honest.

In the episode of Auf Wiedersehen Pet, where the 3 actual 'Geordies' go to watch Sunderland, Dennis (a Geordie in real life) actually refers to the Sunderland fans as 'Geordie lads', which is even more baffling.
