CHRIS WILDER has recommended changes to Middlesbrough’s recruitment operation to ensure there is no repeat of the disappointing end to this summer’s transfer window.

While Boro made some positive moves in the early stages of the window, the final week proved a let-down, with the club missing out on a number of targets as Wilder sought to recruit an additional attacker and a defensive midfielder. In the wake of the window closing, the Boro boss has had to enter the free-agent market to sign Massimo Luongo as cover for Jonny Howson.

The Teessiders overhauled their scouting operation earlier this month, with Chris Jones joining the club as head of scouting to work alongside head of football Kieran Scott as part of a new recruitment and talent identification team.

Further tweaks are anticipated ahead of the transfer window reopening in January, with Wilder having recommended some modifications in the wake of this summer’s events.

“I think there’s stuff that we’ll always be looking to change,” said the Boro boss, who presides over a side sitting in 22nd position in the Championship table after a disappointing start to the campaign. “We’ve talked about the transfer window, and there were some good bits, but some frustrating bits in that too.

“I think we were all a bit frustrated by it. Was it the ideal window? I think we all understand the problems that it’s presented to us. There was some stuff we couldn’t control, but maybe also some stuff we could control better.

“We will be better than that in future windows from a recruitment point of view. There are changes that are going to be made there, and changes that are going to be made in certain other parts of the football club too. It’s my job to recommend that, knowing what ‘really good’ looks like. If we can make those changes, which I’m sure we will do, then it’ll make us better going forward.”

Boro recruited ten senior players during the summer window, with the scale of the overhaul presenting difficulties that have undoubtedly affected performances in the opening month-and-a-half of the season.

Wilder admits the extent of the summer upheaval has been a challenge, although he concedes that is no excuse for the results that have left the Teessiders in the relegation zone.

“It was a big turnover of players this summer,” he said. “I thought it was possible to do that, but maybe it’s been a bit more of a struggle than I expected it to be. There were certain situations which we don’t need to keep going into. The recruitment’s not where we want it to be, but we still have to take responsibility for the results.”

With a number of proposed moves having failed to come to fruition before the window closed, Wilder concedes his squad is lacking depth in a couple of key areas.
However, he also accepts there is a need for a marked improvement when the Championship programme resumes after the international break, with Boro’s first game back pitting them against a Coventry City side currently sitting at the foot of the table with just three points from their opening seven games.

“I don’t think we’re at our strongest, and I think the club will understand that,” he said. “The depth of the squad is not where we need it to be to really like what it looks like."

“I think we all understand that, but that’s just how it is at the moment and we have to deal with it and get on with it. There’s enough talent in that group, and there’s some good players that are pushing.”

* As many posters have commented in one form or another - Chris Wilder`s "big rebuild" cannot be done by one man alone. Clearly, recruitment has been holding the club back and certainly the summer transfer window was a big let down. In his summer Media Conferences Chris was polite and diplomatic about the delay to incomings and outgoings. Many managers and coaches were on media platforms complaining about the slow movement of the transfer market. But, in several instances he appeared annoyed and frustrated when he claimed he needed more "backing" to get deals across the line. Its time the rercruitment team held its hands up and admitted it hasnt been good enough to do the job properly.

I’m willing to give Chris Wilder another season on his mass team rebuild as I think most of our team can only get better and we obviously need ’short time’ strengthening in various areas, but I hope that he realises that no unfortunate results with consequences whereby Boro get stuck in the relegation area will save his job.

After the way the window went, I'd be happy with staying up and a bit of a run in one of the cups this season. We need to be working on so many areas NOW so we can actually have a go next season. Some quality in midfield, a forward line and a replacment for Giles.

We look weaker than last season thats for sure, the players we have brought in all look like upgrades on what we had but for some reason we are less than the sum of our parts. Midfield is the biggest area - how the club have allowed that to happen is mind boggling.

Wilder himself needs to shoulder some responsibility, we prepares them for matches and sets the system of play, which clearly has been wrong on some occassions.

having said all that I cant see any other manager doing a better job given what we have in the squad so we just need to get through till january and try and get some points together and keep away from the bottom end of the table. In jan we need to buy players and get them in early - none of this wait and see bull$hit, pay the rate and get them in - if we dont we could end up getting relegated

We've signed 'better' players than the ones we've moved on. I'm sure signing 12 has made a difference to the side.

Also throw in the fact our 3 best players from last season in Jones / Crooks and Howson have seen form nosedive.

He simply can't blame being where we are on recruitment. We've spent a few quid by champo standards. More than the majority of sides above us. How much do people think we've paid on loan fees/Wages for Stefan / Giles / Muniz and Mowett? I imagine a fortune.

So yes he maybe didn't get who he wants. Yet it's absolutely no excuse for being 3rd bottom.

Throwing 4 points away in the 90th min at Stoke and Watford isn't down to recruitment. Neither is being 3-0 down against Cardiff and QPR.

He's a manager. A manager has to make what he's got better. So no excuses if we fail to turn up at Cov. He's had 2 weeks to make them 'better'.

You cant turn a Ford Mondeo into a Range Rover.
You can polish it, T-cut it, use tyre-blacking, replace the spark-plugs, buy a new starting-handle, drain the sump and clean the windows: but at the end, it is still a Mondeo

We're better in defence, goal and arguably up front.

But we're much weaker in a midfield that was already distinctly average to begin with.

We'd known all summer of our issues there and Wilder was let down by recruitment.

He's not blameless when it comes to our results, and the squad is still much better than our current position, but there are gaping holes in our squad that should have been filled.

I’m not impressed enough with Wilder to let him have a total clear out of back room staff, certainly not until he shows he’s got a plan B and even C. I think he was a perfect fit at the right time at Sheff Utd but it’s increasingly looking like his philosophy
has been found out and he just deflects the blame to everyone but himself.

I don't entirely agree that we have looked a worse team this season, because going forward I think we have improved.

But we've become defensively weaker, due to a combination of Tav leaving, Giles not being as defensively strong as Taylor and Paddy moving from the LCB position.

We brought him in on the back of his past successes playing a certain style of pressing football. Our recruitment team then give him a midfield that is unfit for that style of play, so now people want him to rip up his system and try something new

We'd be better off sticking with the Mondeo - great value for money, solid and reliable, won't let us down, and a few canny tricks up it's sleeve.
Range Rover, quite the opposite

We just want someone skilled in the basic art of football management. We are not man city we cannot just drop a load of money on "the right sort of players". If his system isn't working of course he should try something new, otherwise he is just not a very good football manager.

We are not weaker overall than last year. (certainly on paper)

Some of the players are not playing to the standard they set last season - I don't like been critical but Matty Crooks and Isiah Jones particularly Isiah surely know this themselves. And its not just them, but they are the clearer examples over several or more games.

Muniz - looks a better forward than any we had last season. The forwards that have left were not starting for us by the end, because they were nor perfroming or not good enough.

Giles - is a better left wing back by a mile.

Steffan - over the season will prove a better keeper than we had last season, I am sure.

Lenihan - looks at least as good as Samba

Clarke - looks decent and its good to see a left footed centre half

Akpom when fit looks better than when he was here 2 years ago.

OK we have a deficit with Tav's position against the positives above

We have recruited some young player projects that will take time to develop and hopefully blossom like Spence when bought in 2019.

I feel that some more of the £12.5m transfer surplus should have been spent and the squad should be a couple of players bigger. In general signings were made too late which has had a negative impact on early results.

I tend to think Wilder has not been allowed to buy as he wished - its hard to judge without more information if this is good or bad. Therre does seem to be culture at MFC of decisions on transfers been made by the very top, not just sanctioning. This goes back to Southgate days.

Considering his background this again makes me wonder what the hell Scott has been doing since he arrived.

We’ve long known recruitment is a failing for us and he doesn’t seem to have done a great deal about it.

Write off another season…..

This is what I was alluding to earlier when I was dismissed as a conspiracy theorist. You could tell there were big issues in the background.

This just shows that there is problem after all.

As for the solution I’m not so sure.

I think there’s big issues at the club and this session could go one off two ways.
