Motorists are being warned of diversions from next week to allow major rail bridge replacement works to take place in Middlesbrough.

Work is already under way on the reconstruction of the Denmark Street rail bridge, but no traffic issues have been caused as the road has long been closed to traffic.

However more disruptive works to replace the Boundary Road rail bridge are due to start on Monday, December 12 and will continue until Monday, January 9.

Throughout the works traffic will be diverted via Bridge St West, Exchange Place and Zetland Road.

Information on the closures will also added to nearby variable message signs to warn motorists, with traffic signals on the diversion route monitored during the closure period.

The works have been scheduled over the Christmas period to take advantage of the complete three-day rail line shutdown.

Some disruption to traffic is unavoidable, however, with part of the Station Street car park closed and in use as a site compound.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “We’ve worked closely with Network Rail to ensure the impact of these necessary reconstruction and replacement works is kept to a minimum.

“We are grateful to motorists for their patience and understanding and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
