Micheal Carrick’s Backroom Coaching Staff?

It seemed pretty clear who Carrick wanted to bring to assist him with the job, talk of one coach not wanting to move and delays with compensation to their current clubs and possibly delays due to work permits..

Assistant: Mike Phelan
First Team Coach: Rene Meulensteen

Talk has moved on to suggest that both coaches suggested will now be joining him..

A few more names thrown into the speculation mix sounded believable at least, thought to be in place of but may well be as well as.

Assistant: Alex Bruce
First Team Coach: John O’Shea

We currently have Tinkler, Cattermole and Liddle supporting Leo Percovich as head coach.. but what happens to Leo Percovich? Are we to go our separate ways or is there still a place for Leo? Did Carrick like what he saw against Wigan? What of Grant Leadbitter also.. where did he come from? His inclusion coincided with a 4-1 win away from home. Correlation or Causation?

Assistant: Leo Percovich
First Team Coach: Grant Leadbitter

and finally to the highly respected coaches that have been linked in recent weeks that have been dismissed by many Boro fans. Agnew is trusted with a decent pedigree, Cattermole is The youngest captain in our history and has an unenviable track record of captaining a side fighting relegation year on year.. could be usefu.

Assistant: Steve Agnew
First Team Coach: Lee Cattermole

Not long now until the big unveiling with Gary Pallister, outside the Aryesome Park gates with Carrick in his half and half gear.. parmo in one hand, lemon top in the other. Who will be his regulators, his few good men.. the three amigos?

There's plenty of coaching roles within the club if we want to give the likes of Cattermole and Leadbitter jobs. They're both just starting out as coaches really so let them learn their trade with the u23s, u18s etc.

Leo is a bit different, but for me the manager picks his own team. You could maybe, as chairman, insist on one person being part of the first team staff for continuity etc. But ultimately the manager has overall responsibility and that includes making sure the mix of talent and personalities on his staff is right.

The Gazette had suggested, after talks with 'club sources', that some of the new recruits Wor Micky was wanting to bring were currently in roles elsewhere, which was making the process more time consuming.

I think it's Rene Meulensteen holding things up for Carrick - He was Carrick's #1 choice but he's currently the assistant of the Australia national team, and wants to see them through to the WC.

He’s way to busy to be involved with coaching. He wouldn’t be able to give his all.
Gary Neville on League of Their Own talking about his Valencia experience was pretty funny.
Don't normally watch that but saw a compilation episode last night. Including a marshmallow / golf challenge which was surprisingly compelling.

Looks like a fun show, I think I've been missing out.

That's fine, but maybe we should get Carrick in now and ask Rene to agree to join after the World Cup.

Why wouldn't he agree to join now? With a start date at the end of November or whatever?

How much do international assistant managers and coaches actually do, and in what international location whilst the players are with their parent clubs?

If we were mid world cup or in an international break, where he was heavily involved day-to-day with the players I could understand it, but he can't be doing loads now can he?

Bearing in mind... our outgoing assistant manager, Alan Knill, is also assistant manager of Wales.

I heard that Grant was back around the club about 3 months ago. I suspect he has been brought in to get his badges and experience, maybe around the academy, could see him working with Tinkler for a while before becoming part of a continuity management strategy in the future.

A month of so after the gazette wrote about it ?

I think there's been problems with who Carrick wants vs. who Gibson/Scott want, so it's possible Carrick wants his staff locked down before accepting.

I agree, but who knows... Meulensteen might live out in Oz and not want to come back to England.
It might not even even be Meulensteen - it might be O'Shea who's currently a coach at Stoke.

Jumping on a plane to Wales every now and again isn't as much of an issue as jumping on one to Australia.

He's definitely in and around the first team - he's been on the last couple of youtube training videos

That's a few miles closer to Middlesbrough though.
That was sort of my point though, is he living full time in Sydney or Perth or somewhere?

Brazil, Argentina and Aus have had their international training camps etc in europe in the past as so many of the players are here. It is less disruptive to families and body clocks to bring in 5/8 coaches or whatever than 25 plus players.

Is he in a full-time job in Oz and he is under contract doing 40 hours a week till after the WC, or is he cutting about europe watching games and doing prep work for the next time the squad is together?
