Michael Carrick?

Just thinking about MC, he's doing a great job in so many ways in his first real managerial role, utilising his experience and personality.

As a player, he won all major honours at club level over a number of years. However, he never really got a look in at international level. Was he that good at club level and very unfortunate to miss out internationally or was he fortunate to have played in a really good club side? Or was he, one of those players who quietly, efficently and effectively, get on with their game, who become a key component of the bigger picture, but don't look for attention on and off the field and who only ever really seem to be appreciated, when their not playing? What do you think?

He got 34 England caps. Gerrard and Lampard were always first picks centrally and the holding role was given to Owen Hargreaves when we used it. He was unfortunate that successive England managers were too dumb to realise that the Gerrard/Lampard combo was never going to work.

By all accounts his team-mates at club level held him in high regard and he never looked out of place when playing for Man United.

He was the reason an average Man Utd squad won their last title for sir alex. He was underrated imo. He was the key competent to Man Utd success

A little bit like boeteng for us, they we’re obviously different players with different key attributes but we’re the reason the team could tick as they could

This is after sir Alex, but shows the importance of Micheal Carrick. First one I could find

This article goes someway to explaining why fans outside of man United didn’t really understand what he was all about. Most technically gifted midfielder have had since scholes

I watched an episode of Gary Neville’s Overlap where he was speaking to Paul Scholes - they both agreed Carrick would have offered greater balance to the golden generation England team and was a fantastic player.

He should have been England’s Xavi. He was a fantastic player.

"Carrick gives United balance and can play defensively too.

"He passes well, has a good shot and is a complete player. United have a very good midfield at a high level and they're strong physically and technically.”

- Xavi

As Carrick says timing in football is everyrhing and at international level he was just unfortunate, he was bought at a young age for a top fee at the time 18m by Man U and played virtually every game when available for Sir Alex, he also captained UTD, continued to be a pivitol part of the team post Sir Alex and went on to join the coahing staff and then was entrusted to lead the team albeit on a short interim basis, the respect and manner in which his ex team mates and pros around the go take about him shows just how good a player he was and now we are very fortunate that he is our manager and giving us a superb brand of football to go and watch, no matter what in this division we will score goals and that in its self keeps you excited but what he has done is so much more than that, we have a strategic way of playing and you can see the team is well drilled, there are issues that need to be addressed in the defensive side of our game as we seem to give away to many goals but this is an exceptional time to be a boro fan - lets hope we can take this seasons momentum and go back to the Prem as that would be the icing on the cake!

I agree, the isuue Carrick and other top players have had notably scholes managers wouldnt change things, they all picked the same team, IMO imagine a Pep managing england at that time he would of been very interested in utilising the ability of the likes of Carrick and Scholes and putting them in there natural position.

This sums up how good he was

Look at these passes. I bet he’s still amazing in training

I think he said early on that he doesn’t play I training. You hear stories about Hoddle when he was coach, doing things in training and growing frustrated with players who weren’t up to his level.

From what I can see of Carrick he’s very calm, obviously driven but looks like he genuinely cares about his players. What start to a first job in management

Key trait of a manager, Inspire, encourage, he has the leadership abilities in abundance as does the rest of his team, who cant be forgotten!

I think he was probably slightly ahead of his time.

During his peak years, the key attribute for a holding midfielder was probably tenacity / the ability to cover ground / make lots of tackles / recover the ball etc.

The ‘deep lying playmaker’ role probably grew in popularity slightly after Carricks peak years.

If he was still playing now, he would be very sought after by the likes of Pep who has always played with a Carrick type I.e Busquets / Rodri etc
