Michael Carrick 15 wins in 20 games

No, those points are what 2nd finished on in each of those years. What you have to look at is what 3rd finished on.

In 19/20, 82 would’ve been enough for 2nd (we’ll not get into goal difference)

If a team in 2nd finishes on 85 but the team in third finishes on 78 then the team in 2nd hypothetically didn’t need 85 to finish 2nd, they could have finished on 79 and still finished 2nd.

It’s all hypothetical, every season is different. It’s an indicator only of a required number of points for successful achievement of 2nd. I.e. you can’t really compare seasons with certainty you can only look at hypotheticals /trend or whatever the word is.

I suppose it depends on how you look at it.
In my view last season we would have needed 89 points to finish 2nd. 87 would have put us 3rd.
Unless what you mean is Bournemouth only actually needed 83 points to finish 2nd? In which case I think I get your point.

Thanks for that - I was wondering how to look at it when I posted the numbers but that makes sense

82 in 19/20 gets you in 3rd place

Yeah, I’ve explained my thinking. I’m not going through it again. You can look at it both ways. Ultimately it doesn’t matter what got or would’ve got, what matters is how many we get this year and that it’s enough for second.

2nd place it gonna be close and Burley are running away with it.

It all depends who you're substituting yourself in the league for as obviously the division in question won't have 25 teams. If you're subbing our Boro side for Fulham or Bournemouth, then yeah.

If you're subbing our inclusion for any one of the other 22 sides, including of course Boro from last season, then nope, you'd need either 89 points or 88 with better GD.
