Metal Detecting around Teesside

After a few years of being interested in purchasing a metal detector but never actually doing so, my partner recently bought one for me for my birthday. I'm a complete novice and have spent a few days fiddling with it in the garden but I'm keen to get out there with it while the sun is still shining.

I'm wondering if anyone here an experienced detectorist who could share some tips with someone just starting out?

Have a scout around on line for an organised group perhaps. Then like in the series you get permission to detect in a farmer's field.

I've had a Google and there's a couple of forums I can browse around so thanks Rob. Seems like beaches, woods, hiking trails and river banks are the best bet for a beginner.

Definitely get down the DMDC. I'd stay away from Sheila's lemonade😂

Jokes aside it actually interests me. I think to get everything done legit and save hassle about 'claims' if you strike gold then a club is the way to go.

The permissions etc is important. You could find some genuine 'treasure' and get nothing if permission not granted. I actually saw two people with them on Blackpool beach this morning (no doubt looking for money and lost jewelery).

I find it really fascinating what can be found just 6-10 inches under the ground that's been undiscovered for 100s of years. People could have walked over treasure and history everyday without knowing.

Hope you get to do the gold dance 😉

I'd settle for old coins and the like as a starter. I've become absolutely fascinated by history in the last few years so it got me interested in what could be hidden beneath our feet waiting to be discovered.

I have no doubt you'll find some coins and maybe buttons etc. I think it's really interesting.

I watched a program recently were these lads were in Belgium and France detecting WW2 battle areas (basically forests and open fields). It was stunning that nearly every sweep 'beeped' with shrapnel and bullets/casings etc. They pulled up some right stuff and only inches from the surface.

Silver Roman coins seem to be one of the more common decent finds nut worth that much mind but I’d still be chuft , like waiting all day to catch a fish then over joyed when you catch a stickle back .
Hopefully Il get metal detector myself at some point . What model is yours ?

If you have Facebook look for the Durham metal detectors ( lots of planned events and people with lots of experience who are willing to advise, normally pay to a charity to attend).

Lots of signs up esp in France saying no metal detecting allowed
