Mendieta

What does that mean? ... genuine question 😂
He was an Anglophile who loved noughties indie rock (turned his nose up at 90s Britpop) and was an early investor in Brewdog (before it became massive), only drank Bolivian coffee grown at a certain altitude (and hand-ground his own beans). Probably used to wear a really old really worn black t-shirt with a faded Batman logo on it, and a bobble hat. Probably. Used to like the Smiths until Morrissey said he didn't like Chinese people. Wore black thick-rimmed glasses despite not needing them. Grew long beard from 2009-2014 despite previously saying beards were for paedophiles.

:ROFLMAO:... it was cool to throw Mendieta's name around as a beacon of your football knowledge. He played for one of the less fashionable clubs in Valencia but was causing a bit of a storm around europe and was relatively unknown to the masses in England for a while.

I'm with you! 😂

There's a part of me that wonders if his 'love for the area' is partly why some are remembering him so fondly. The fact he stuck around in Yarm after retiring etc and loved parmos and went to Blaises a few times.
He moved from the North East to Hertfordshire in 2014 when he got a job with Sky Sports. His wife Helen was from Middlesbrough I believe and still lives in Herts. Wiki says Gaizka is now married to Carmina so I presume sadly he and Helen have parted?

Mendieta was underwhelming for most of his time at Boro. Didn't have the pace or the fitness for the league. Possibly due to his injuries although I just don't think he was ever that sort of player. He struggled in Serie a for Lazio as well. Valencia obviously got the best of him and he never really hit those heights again.

Did show his obvious class sporadically but it just wasn't often enough and eventually his playing time reflected that, Lee Cattermole and James Morrison were both preferred to him in his final season.

Sounds like he it, unless you've just uncovered a pretty serious case of bigamy!

Haha but of course wiki could be wrong. I can’t see any mention of Mendieta getting remarried or any pictures of Carmina but there are plenty of him with Helen but which seem to stop around 2019. The only clues are some cryptic comments on Helen’s Insta feed.

Not getting involved but I haven't seen him in the Bull for a while

Is it stuff like "finally got shot of that daft Basque b****d! Burnt all his Vaccines records 'n all!"

I’ll never forget the FA cup tie at Nuneaton Borough in Jan 2006. Gaizka scored a magnificent free kick to put us 1 up.
The game ended 1-1, and I think we beat them 5-2 in the replay.

You made most of that up😂

That was to do with us having to make a payment if he played more games. Used to watch him play for the reserves that season and he was outstanding. Certainly good enough for a first team start in a struggling team. Southgates treatment of him was a disgrace. Something Southgate has admitted and since apologised to Mendieta for.

Sounds like viduka insurance money to me. Is there any proof? I thought Southgate was right to drop him from the team on form alone. Mind you Gary O'Neill certainly wasn't a step up.

Nah he was definitely out of the team for contractual reasons.

Was killing it in training and publicly stating how keen he was to play.

We were playing Matty Bates and Shawky in there at one point and Mendi wasn't even making the bench! He was well past his best at that point, but I suspect still better than those two.

No idea about any clauses kicking in, first I've heard of it, but he was on a big wage and they were trying to force him to move on.
