Meanwhile over on Ready To Go

The problem with them is they've always seen themselves on par with Newcastle because back when Noah was still swimming around in his dad's sack they actually won things.. 6 titles to the skunks' 4, for example. They cant let go of a past that none of them witnessed or were a part of (harking on about the 1973 cup win is another of their pet obsessions). So they constantly look at Newcastle and want to be what they are.. media darlings, constant top flight football, signing quality players, dreams of Europe etc .. when in reality they're the runts of the north east, forever in the shadow of the skunks, and always getting outdone by little Boro down the road (hence why the modern day mackem tries desperately to distance itself from the historical rivalries we had - something their fathers and grandfathers had the bottle to acknowledge and embrace. The modern day mackem has no backbone and is no longer capable of taking banter, unlike those that came before them).

No one likes Sunderland. And reading their board, even Sunderland fans don't like Sunderland.

After spending nearly half a decade in the 3rd division, they did brilliant to finish in the play offs last season yet sitting 7th midway through their 2nd season back in this league still isn't good enough. Geordies get accused of being delusional, but mackems take it to another level at times. They want quick success because they're sh!tting themselves that the longer they're out of the Premier League, the less chance they'll ever match the only club that matters to them, NUFC.

Yesterday they had two match threads going at the same time, one for their own game, and one for Newcastle's, some of them preferred watching the Newcastle match and commenting on that thread rather than watching their own team. Their hatred of Newcastle is stronger than their love for their own club. Its quite sad really.

Weird they are still a point a head us and doing okay but don't seem as happy as us Boro fans but not sure what we have to gloat about, although we are still in the cup 😊
I think most of our fans understand the impact that the injuries have had on us and despite this we're still only a point off the playoff's. With us its very much better things to come once we get players like Hackney and McGree back and uo to speed.

If Gibson had sacked Carrick and replaced him with Beale, we would be melting down just as badly. Mowbray joined Sunderland at almost the same time as Carrick joined us and, arguably did a better job under harder circumstances.
The thing is the sunderland fans were largely dead against the appointment of Mogga too.

The difference there is that we don’t have boat loads of threads demanding Carrick is sacked when we are within one game of the play offs.

You reap what to sow. Be careful what you wish for etc.

I guess that highlights the difference between the two sets of fans. Boro has its whoppers but generally the fan base is pragmatic and realistic in its expectations on where we are as a club.

Sunderland fans struggle with this, feeling they are better than they are and expecting better outcomes. It’s probably born if the obsession with their wealthier, more illustrious and more popular neighbours who cast a very large shadow over them.

I always think that, rather than making them a force in English football today, that puts them on a par with Preston, Pompey and Huddersfield.

I think you are right that they measure themselves by history they've never seen or lived through and no one else cares about. Possibly all football history books are a massive practical joke at Sunderland fans' expense?

Yeah totally different expectations and I think most of us really enjoy how we play the game and appreciate what we are trying to do. , it's just interesting how it is perceived by some that they are having a bad season when they are above us in the league and still have everything to play for

They are the most toxic fan base in the country. They live in an alternative dreamworld where Sunderland is a massive club and should be winning everything and admired by all. When reality punctures this delusion and they realise that they are just another run of the mill club with little hope of breaking into the elite, they scapegoat their players and managers.

Several past players and managers have remarked how it's an awful place to play football due to the toxicity of the fans.

Some of them are really odd, they seem to be more interested in Newcastles downfall and denying Middlesbrough even exist before supporting their own football team.

You really ought to post that on Ready to Go because ….
a) it’s absolutely spot on
and
b) the vitriol you’d get thrown at you would be hilarious 😆
