McNair

I think he can perform in a 2. Let's not forget Carrick was favouring him above Fry last season, and he started a lot of games alongside Lenihan when we were in good form.
Rav has to play, if we play with a back 4 next year then there is only one spot alongside, we have fry, Lenihan and Clarke do we need McNair as well? I’m not sure we do.

Can he perform in a 2, yes, is he a good enough Cb to perform as first choice in a 2 in a top 4 team? Maybe lacks a bit of consistency for that

Although he’s been a great servant I’d agree it’s time for us to move on unless he’s willing to take a big wage cut.

Hard to find players like Paddy, who are versatile and can offer respective leadership on and off the field. He’s one of the first names on the Northern Irish team sheet so I’d say he’s definitely got a lot of admirers who are going to pay him his worth.

I'd personally be looking to sell Fry. I think he needs a change and I don't think he's suited to the way Carrick wants us to play.

If we sell Fry then I think offering McNair a new deal under the same terms could be justified.

Look at the stats for with him and without him at CB, from this season and last season. Good solid 2 points a game with him, well under that without him. Over the last 80 or so games we've done much better with him than without him.

It’s possibly the end of the road for both to be honest then bring one in as a backup to Rav.

He's far too expensive. We're paying him over a million a year at the moment, and he's barely played up to the past couple of weeks. I know it's silly maths, but that's over 2000 season ticket holders, just on one player, never mind the rest of the squad.

The one thing is that I can't imagine anyone would be willing to pay him that much, particularly if the promoted teams are the ones who came down last year - they're set; maybe a newly minted Ipswich or a Coventry would look at him.

Of course that might play into our hands but I bet we wouldn't offer him half what he's currently on. He's a free agent so he can do what he likes, and we'll get nothing for him but I'm sure that someone will offer him more than we can / are willing to.

*******g hell!
When you convert his annual wages to no. of season tickets, that seems obscene.
Shame, because he's a good player, but not at that price.

I know it's fag packet stuff, but I do like to occasionally think in those terms. At the most, our season tickets can only bring in a (and this is very optimistic, most of them paying full whack) £12-14m a year. I know there's everything else - TV, sponsorship, merchandise etc. etc. but it did put into perspective how many bums on seats we needed to pay (say) Gaston Ramirez.

As much as I like McNair I think there's zero chance of him signing a new contract on the same terms, or even close for that matter.

I’d be amazed if he’s still here next season - in fact i wouldn’t be surprised if hasn’t already got another club lined up to go to. I think he’s very good at championship level but he will most likely be able to earn more somewhere else as a free agent, so you can’t blame him if he moves on.

Not really an ability issue. He will want any contract to be as close to his current wage as possible. There are plenty of parachute payment flush championship clubs capable of getting a lot closer to that than we are sadly.
