Apart from players squabbling over who takes it I've not seen a different player to the one eventually taking it having the ball before
 
Pretty sure it's to counteract players trying to get in their head thinking they're gonna take it, use up all their efforts on the wrong man only for someone else to end up taking it unphased.

Banford did exactly the same in the Leeds v PNE game earlier in the day and when it was all sorted he passed the ball over to Piroe to take the penalty.
 
It is such a good idea. I suppose Grant Leadbitter did this all by himself.
Grant Leadbitter used to step out of the firing line didn't he? He would pick up the ball and step out of the box and away from all the arguments - he would collect his thoughts and step back in and up to the spot after calm had been restored.
