Mayor Preston and tonight's Middlesbrough Council meeting.

It's all completely vacuous. He talks in Trumpisms about complexity but has no idea what those complexities are or any vision/policy as to how to deal with them.

Running a local authority simply isn't the same as running a business, and a successful businessman does not automatically equate to a successful politician or community leader. Surely the good people of Boro are starting to see through this.

Watching this - I believe he didn't say what the OP suggests. Not if that timing we were told to look up above is correct.
Am not getting involved in the politics and whether he is right or wrong. But context is everything and he doesn't blame people spending on beer and fags does he?
He is talking about food banks and who can and cannot use the food banks.
Am not commenting on whether I like the message in full but surely Andy Preston's words have been taken out of context from viewing the facebook feed at 2:19:20
We make sure people don't go hungry at our food bank, particularly children, and even if people are socially playimg the game, we think penalising them isn't the way forward. He has no right to tell me who can come to our food bank.

Bear imagine if they were government funded.... Eeek

That seems to be the argument by the RNLI to stay independent as well . . .
Which is undeniably a good decision and they do seem to be well funded as well. It not something I donate to unless I am walking round a lifeboat and it crosses my mind.

Lets see if Mayor Preston is prepared to go on record to say what he is actually doing to help tackle child povert in Middlesbrough? [other than make ill-informed comments].

Im sure Skippers Lane Depot could do with a hand - perhaps Mr Preston would like to volunteer a couple of days a week - he wouldnt even have to iron his shirt!

Dear Mayor Andrew Preston.....

given your inference that many using food banks wouldnt need support if they didnt use "booze" or "fags" - is that the same reason that Middlesbrough has the highest increase in child poverty in the whole of "Great" (?!!) Britain?

Should our children go without food if their carers smoke?
That would eliminate Child Poverty wouldnt it?
Lets not forget - half of the children in poverty belong to working families!

Middlesbrough sees biggest increase in child poverty, anywhere in the UK

More than 30,000 Teesside kids are living in poverty, and half are from working families

In Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland the figure rose from 16% to 23%, in Redcar from 18% to 24%, in Stockton North from 18% to 24%, and in Stockton South from 14% to 18%.

Anna Feuchtwang, chair of End Child Poverty and chief executive of the National Children’s Bureau, said: “We may all be experiencing the storm of Coronavirus together, but we are not all in the same boat.

"The government’s data shows the extent to which over the past four years, children in low income families have been cut adrift and are already experiencing unacceptable hardship through cuts and freezes to the benefits system."

She added: "Our country’s children are now at severe risk of being swept deeper into poverty as a result of the pandemic and lockdown. This is why we are asking the government to strengthen the social security system which is there to hold us steady during tough times, by immediately increasing household income for those least well-off.

"Ending child poverty must be at the heart of the Government’s plan for economic recovery, so that when this crisis is over all children can enjoy a life free from poverty in which they are healthy, can thrive at school and have opportunities for the future.”

These wonderful, self-less volunteers, would be happy to see an end Child Poverty and reliance on local generousity to put food on the table to feed the kids:

The real people at the heart of Teesside are typified by these people and the comments made by the adults and kids who need to be fed.
You can dress mutton up as lamb, whether it has a smart shirt and tie.....but it has no blood left in it or a heart.

Just the man for the job......

17 of the top 20 constituencies with the highest increases in child poverty are in the North East. The same North East that even before the figures in 14/15 was pretty much amongst the poorest areas of the UK. This levelling up doesn't appear to be going too well who'd have thunk it?

Poverty generally and specifically child poverty should be a huge, huge stain on this Government and should be headline news daily until they resolve it. Instead, they get an ever increasing support from those they seek to harm and successfully bat away the blame to Labour even though I can promise things wouldn't have been this bad under a Brown, Miliband or Corbyn government.

Divide and conquer seems as successful a strategy as ever and the ones who suffer the most are poor innocent children; if this was in any other country in the world we'd be crying out about the uncaring, immoral and corrupt government.
