Circa 2005 on the old forum someone recommended them.

A Certain Trigger one of my top 10 favourite albums, seen them live 11 times including Brixton Academy circa 2007 (I took some clients on a corporate do šŸ˜€šŸ˜€) and then Leeds Met when Art Brut supported them.

Anyone else a fan?

Yep.

Superb live band. Paul Smith is as good a front man as there is and they are excellent musicians.

My son, who just turned 18 this week, loves them. I think their most recent Risk To Exist album must be one of his most played ones.

Agree great band. Seen them few times also. Met Paul and have photos with him. Couldnā€™t believe how small he was but I am 6ā€™3 so dwarfed abit over him

ā€œOverland, west of Suezā€œ, and ā€œThis is What Becomes of the Broken Heartedā€ are fantastic tracks as well.

Great band. Apply some pressure came on the radio today and reminded me how much I like them. They were one of the bands that make up the soundtrack of my time at university so will always be in my playlist.

Saw them in San Francisco a couple of years ago. Smith noticed a guy in the audience with a Boro shirt on (Heritage Hampers one) and proceeded to have an onstage discussion (mostly with himself) about past Boro shirt sponsors.

Probably only 3 or 4 people in the whole audience had a clue what he was talking about.

Also check out Paul Smith and The Imitations which is pretty decent too.,

Great band, love the first couple of albums. They were just starting out when I was at Uni in Newcastle, seemed like they played an instore gig nearly every week (see also, The Futureheads).

Remember a couple of particularly valedictory gigs at Stage 2 Northumbria Uni and the Academy. Pretty sure Art Brut played with them at the Empire one time, possibly the same tour mentioned above.

Don't like them at all. Haven't heard any of their later stuff but when they were popular with their first album I really disliked them! Just not my thing, there's a lot of bands from that scene that I think are crap!

I saw them in Glasgow years ago, and they were excellent. I've always fancied seeing them again, but never managed to sort a ticket. I was quite impressed by an interview Paul Smith did with Pauline Murray as part of an exhibition at The Baltic Art Gallery. The "art" bit was playing the interviewer and interviewee on separate screens, which wasn't very interesting, but the interview itself and the characters were.

Crap or just not offering anything fresh?

I found that they can be half decent entertainers when live but many of the lauded bands were producing pretty standard fayre. The individual tracks I heard from some, these included, certainly didn't excite me.

Yeah that's probably fairer. Futureheads is another one I never got.

I knew someone who grew up with Paul as family friends. He got guest tickets to a gig and took his girlfriend and two of her friends.

One of the friends spent the evening berating Paul for accepting the band as a ā€œNewcastle bandā€ (where they formed and most of the band were from) and underplaying his Teesside roots. She ended the evening getting quite drunk and then booted Paul up the bum quite hard, so Iā€™m told. Funny story.

I always quite liked them, without being an obsessive fan. Saw them at Stockton Riverside one year which was a sort of homecoming for Paul. I thought they were great. Had most of their albums back when buying albums was still a thing.

True @Corcaigh_the_Cat they're fairly generic guitar based indie band, but live they're quite exciting.

Their cover of The Fall's Edinburgh Man but renaming it to Middlesbrough Man is pretty decent, although a lie given he comes from Billingham, which everyone knows is full of mackems ;-)

Thanks for the link Lizards, I hadnā€™t heard that cover before šŸ‘šŸ»

I've seen them a few times on their trips to California. They are a great live band. T_L_J - I have worn my boro top to their shows in SF and I think you and I may have briefly chatted in the street after the show at the independent a couple of years ago? My old band used to do a cover of Graffiti - a really fun song to play!
