Matt Clarke, what happened to him?

Unless I missed it I didn’t see any info at the time of what the injury is or that he’d be out for. He’s been out ages and still no sign of a return. Anyone know?

Yes. He was making progress but had a set back. They have to be careful and take their time.
Carrick says that Clarke is remaining very upbeat and positive.
I saw him at the Boro kids xmas party and he was great with all the youngsters. Signing stuff, chatting and joking with them.

It’s tough one but if we get promoted he might not play for us again. That’s the reality of the situation

I'd actually forgot we had him. I guess it's not overly an 'issue' as long as we have 3 fit CBs (very good ones at that).

It seems to be one of these 'weird' injuries that we don't here much about. Also no real time frame for a return.

We've had a couple of real stinkers injury wise in Ameobi and Fisher. God knows what we've paid in wages per minutes on the pitch. Fisher is out of contract in the summer so won't see again.

To think I worried about Watmore when we signed him. Hardly missed a game. I guess it's the nature of football that you can simply get injured.

I've still not heard anything about Ameobi. No new club links or that he's getting ready for a return/training with a club or even retiring. All very strange.

He was highly rated at Brighton and wba player of the season on loan so there’s reason to think he could cut it in the prem given a chance?
Not even good enough for top half Championship, never mind the Premier League. He's get roasted week in week out by decent attackers.

Its a shame I think because he's a very good defender especially at championship level. I think If we go up he'll fall back into the loan system. I imagine Fry, Leinhan and Mcnair are pretty nailed on regardless of division.
I reckon we'd end up with someone Carrick played with as an experienced option

With Lenihan/Fry/McNair doing so well it takes the pressure off needing to rush Clarke back
The flip side of that is with them doing so well he may struggle to get in unless there are any injuries or suspensions

Thankfully we’re in a position where we aren’t missing him at all and have enough cover to the point that Dijksteel isn’t making the bench now he’s fit.

His signing was one where our ex-manager was banging on about left footed Centre backs and right footed centre backs playing here and there, and naively I assumed that our already good defence would be massively improved from before. We all know that what actually happened is that we looked shambolic at the back, leaking goals aplenty.

We definitely have not seen the best of Matt Clarke. He is very experienced at this level and hopefully comes back strong at some point.

How did he get through his medical, wasn’t he injured when he arrived as the reason for his iffy performances?

He picked it up after his arrival.

He was brilliant on his debut, man of the match, and then started to play through the pain.

He will be going wherever Wilder goes next unless that club happens to be blessed with a plethora of left-footed centre halves.

I doubt we would have signed him if Carrick was in charge and playing 442 rather than 3 centre halves. With 442, we have enough cover with the Lenihan, Fry or McNair and Dijksteel and Bola as cover if needed. Only a problem if 2 out of the first choice 3 got injured for a period of time.
