Match Off Decision Friday Morning

Can't bear the TV coverage, which started to grate after about 10 minutes.

The. Slow. And. Deliberate. Way. That. Everyone. Is. Talking. Is. Driving. Me. Nuts.

I am actually quite sad about the whole thing. Not a fan of the royal family, and I think the whole thing needs modernizing and shaking up. But, the queen was impressive and had been in that role for so long, she is quite amazing.

I'll just avoid the TV coverage over the next few days.

I hope that the sport goes ahead and I see no reason to stop it apart from the day of the funeral itself.
I put it on around half 7 last night and listened to Huw Edwards say something like “we cross to Balmoral… where the arrival of Prince… Harry… is imminent. He’s expected to arrive… in… a… Land Rover, we think, we expect… like the cars the other… Royals arrived in… earlier today, but… it could be another black car, a similar one… but we… do know that we expect him to arrive very soon.”

On and on it went, him and Witchell just trying to fill air time. Again, I understand the protocols and respect people’s right to feel and grieve and mourn however they like, I just don’t know why you’d have this kind of coverage really.

Perhaps just having that sort of thing on in the background, Auntie Beeb pumping out general chit chat during a major national moment, is comforting for some people. Who knows. It just seemed a bit mad.

The participants have a job to do. If the games are played they need to play.

If the sport authorities decide to play, or not, the players don’t have a say.
Here's hoping looks like the government have given the all clear but is now up to the FA to make the final decision along with the clubs?

Thank goodness for catch-up TV and Spotify.

Waiting for all the cars to arrive was more tedious than Sky Sports News on transfer deadline day.

"There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period. This is at the discretion of individual organisations.

As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral. They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations."

Government guidance.
Up to the EFL now.

So they are in ‘damned if they do and damned if they don’t’ territory….

It's another example of how backward this country is. I respected the Queen, she seemed like a good 'un, but to collectively force mourning on an entire country for a 96 year old billionaire does seem a bit skewed. To cancel sporting events where normal people can escape for a few hours is ridiculous.

A mate of mine works on the live BBC 1+2 schedules as they playout live, he said they got a lot of flack when Phil died about the amount of coverage, but the Queen is the big one so it'll probably go on for the full planned time - 9 to 10 days.

Boxing at the o2 now in the balance . BBBOC cancelled tonight’s bouts and a decision later on tomorrows boxing!

It's the "mourning" thing that I am genuinely not clear on. If we're expecting normal aspects of everyday life to just stop, why is that. Are people so physically and emotionally distressed by the news that they literally cannot function? It's obviously a concept most of us are completely unfamiliar with as this has never happened in our lifetime on this scale.

I appreciate it's different to grieving, which I always assumed to be the result of a direct relationship with the deceased?

This feels different to me, it feels very much like "thou must mourn", which in itself opens up the endless debate around the institution itself. Would it really be such in a stretch in a (supposed) progressive, modern state to just say "people are invited to celebrate their life in whichever way they see fit" and leave it at that?

The guidance seems to suggest that many organisations/institutions can leave it up their own decision as to how they proceed, again reigniting the debate about how this should proceed, "damned if they do... etc".

You should see the way they do it in countries such as the UAE or Saudi. This is nothing

I can't get my head around the current events, I understand that this is a historic moment for the country but mourning someone that you don't know or you've never met? I don't get it.
To be fair I was gutted when David's Armstrong and Shearer died recently.

"Kids, an old, rich lady you never met has died, so we're cancelling your football matches"

GRASS ROOTS? The kids aren;t allowed to play their opening fixture of the season?
It's absolutely ridiculous. Even more so than pro games being postponed.

What do they think these kids are going to be doing instead? Most of them are probably going to end up going over the park for a kick about with their mates anyway.

They're certainly not going to be sitting at home reflecting on the life of an old woman they've never met.
