Marcus Tavernier is pushing for a Premier League move this Summer..

Bit

like our success in signing strikers? Sorry, terribly elementary reasoning
I don't think that Tavernier's contribution is irreplaceable and I don't think it would be too difficult to reinvest that money to replace him.. we've already sort of done that with Riley McGree who I believe would this season outperform Tavernier in the creativity department.

Tavernier's goal and assist output is relatively poor for someone that has the remit to get forward, create and score goals.

In reality if him or his agent are pushing he'll go, probably for the same or similar price to Spence. I would love Tav to say, but we are a Championship club and any young player with ambition will jump at the chance to play in the EPL. As someone else said recently 'Thems the breaks'

I think the opposite. I think if we sell Tav to fund an Armstrong or two strong championship level midfielders we will have a far greater chance of going up than we have at the moment. People need to re read the mid season threads on Tav when he had 8 to 10 very ropey performances. He definitely isn’t the messiah or the key to our success or failure. I would be more worried if we lost Djiksteel, Crooks or McNair plus keeping Howson was a big plus. I would quickly ship Tav out for £12m and reinvest it wisely.
reinvest it wisely - thats the big issue tho isnt it. 10 days before the season starts. I would let anyone in the squad go to replace them by 2 strong championship players but thats easier said than done. We were told Wilder had money to spend before we sold spence but presume spence money covers the srikers we want.

It's not so much finding players who want to come as convincing clubs to part with them.

If we can replace Tav for £6m or whatever why aren't Bournemouth after that player rather than Tav?

£12m is peanuts in today's market for a prem side. Spence was only that much up front because everyone knew we wanted him gone and quite possibly because there were question marks over his mentality.

Tav is more experienced, has no concerns over his attitude and most importantly is a key player we don't want to sell. It's a completely different equation.

Swapping Tav for an equal ability striker or funding a worldy could make sense, but just doing it for the cash wouldn't, especially if we did not already have a replacement and a striker 99% over the line. I suppose we could then blow the money on a big time forward and go on a mad hunt for a cheaper midfielder as a backup to Crooks and McGree or have McNair cover midfield and defence if we really had to.

He's worth far, far more than Spence, as a player and to us, largely due to his position, experience, the fact we want to keep him, there's seemingly no attitude doubts and he's been quite happy here. He was also probably our best player under Wilder too, and really came on a lot in 2022. I reckon this season could really be a breakout year, and then we would have to let him go.

He does only have a year left on his contract mind. We wouldn't want to risk him going on a free, but if he went and we didn't get an equal level replacement or spend it on a striker then we're not going up, which would have a massive opportunity cost, more than Tav will ever be worth.

I'd be trying to tie him down for an extra year and saying we would let him go to a prem club for min 15m next year, but putting an NDA on the 15m.

Tav has 2 years on his contract according to the gazette

I must have got that wrong and we must have added another year, or had a one year option? Hopefully that's correct though, it's good news.

he's far more of an all round player. He has no more remit that any other midfielder to get forward. He was in the top 10 in the league for chances created though.

It was a one year option which we invoked last season

Not sure about all this love in with Tav?....Yes he played better towards the end of the season, but to be honest he was missing for over 20 games , loosing the ball... overplaying... not looking up when in possession... time and time again he infuriated me with his lack of decision making.. He was never dropped or substituted because Wilder liked his energy, plus we were short of options..
So if a Prem club offer silly money , I say sell I wouldn't miss Tav in the team, we can replace and invest.

A lot of touchy people commenting here! Deary me.

I heard a report on TalkSport and reshared it. I didn't say he's going, I didn't say I've just seen him doing cartwheels along Bournemouth seafront in a Cherries shirt.

It's been widely reported that we've turned bids down already, and £10,000,000-£15,000,000 for a Premier League club is a drop in the ocean, so do I think it's possible? Yes. Do I know that he wants to leave? No I don't.

If there was truth in this, I personally believe the money could be reinvested easily.. I don't think he's irreplaceable and think for the money received we could get someone of equal ability, and then some.
Any evidence, other than TalkSport, to support your title of this thread? I‘m assuming you‘re correct that someone on there actually used those words.

Playing in the championship is almost anonymous. Playing and standing out for a lower end PL team can do far more for a career/bank balance than doing well in the championship. If he has the belief in himself that he can stand out then why wouldn't he give them a go.

If someone matches our valuation and gives them the chance to play in the PL on PL wages then anyone would go.

Even if they get relegated he'll be back to where he is now at the least (but on a much higher wage).

This 100% i was born in boro and love the boro but i would be going even if it was the lowest ranked prem team

Jesus feller, he’s shared what talksport have said, it’s also been shared by Alex Crook on Twitter, you’re interrogating the poor guy like you’ve just found him in bed with your wife.

Ah The Ben Gibson Rationale, how's that working out?
40k a week at Norwich is nothing to be sniffed at, won a championship trophy with them as well.

It would be hard for most people on 8k a week to turn down 40-50 even if it was only going to last a year.

He wasn't missing, he still played every game he was fit, and probably ran more than any other player in the team during those games. You might not think that matters but it really does, as it contributes to pressure, and putting pressure on the opponents gets you the ball back quicker. It also freed up Crooks to work with Jones etc, if he wasn't as good or as fit/ doing a covering job then their stats would have suffered.

His average rating was second behind Crooks, his assists second behind Jones, 4th top scorer (ahead of a few strikers), joint second MOM, pass percentage was 4th of those who played more than 1000 minutes. A lot less yellows than Crooks, Jones and Howson, less bans etc.

Then consider what all those stats would have been if he played every game last year under Wilder, and if he had a decent player on the left beside him (he has both this year).

He's not going to be Iniesta.

If Spence is worth 12.5m to us + 7.5m of addons we might not get then Tav has to be worth at least 20m up front. We'd have to put £10m towards a less effective midfielder, but it would put £10m in the striker pot, which is getting more important by the day.

There's no point selling for 10-15m, we would get that or more next year, plus retain a good player on fair wages for a year (which is worth a lot).

That actually proves the point because you are comparing 1 season in one of the worst teams in the league (us) and he stood out, got an England call-up and a move to a PL club (not the worst in the league).

Tav hasn't had a season in the PL yet so going to Forest or similar this season would be more like Gibson's 1st season in the PL with us rather than what followed.
