Marcus Betinelli stats

From reading online opinion it’s safe to say that this season Betinelli hasn’t performed as well as expected of a keeper with his experience. I’ve had mixed feelings as I’ve seen him blamed a few times for things that weren’t cut and dry, but he’s only getting blamed for those incidents because he has conceded dubious goals so inevitably the spotlight falls on him.

However, I came across this thread on Twitter (retweeted by the excellent goalkeepers union podcast) which seems to point towards him underperforming in a number of situations when you look at the graphics. Is he just having a poor season? Is he a victim of our tactics? Bad luck playing a part? Other issues? I can’t help think in typical Boro style he’ll turn up somewhere in the championship next season and be a different player!

pretty much worst GK in the league looking at those stats on the thread.

Said it all season but those stats really back it up, significantly the worst keeper in the league. Needs to be our number one priority in the summer

Goal scorer(s) have to be the number one priority for me. I’d like to think a decent scout (not Gill) could pick up a decent keeper.

My gut feeling is that we have had worse and we have had better. I feel more confident with him than say Pears last season, but he's not as as good as say Mark Schwarzer.

I’d agree with this. He’s not the worst keeper we’ve had in recent years and it’s not unheard of for a Boro player to undeservedly become a scapegoat... but those stats seem pretty damning and seem to back up the consensus that he’s been mostly poor. He’s played well at other times in his career so I’m more wondering why he’s not doing it for us... heart maybe not in it/just a loan/our tactics etc

Appreciate the stats, but just watching him recently he seems average and his judgement when having to leave his goal must worry his fellow defenders.
Neil W knows we need 2 strikers and a keeper to come anywhere near "doing a Norwich".

I wouldn't say he is a scapegoat. I don't think he is a good goalkeeper but not making him a scapegoat. If we had to go with him next season I could handle that as I think what little cash we have would be better spent elsewhere whether it be in wages or transfer fees.

That’s a fair point, I feel much the same about him as I’d want our forward line sorting first.

After some games he’s certainly been on the end of a lot of stick on here (I’d say some fans have made him a scapegoat at times) and elsewhere, and like I mentioned in the first post I don’t think all of it was totally his fault, gk can be an unforgiving position when you make a couple of mistakes.

Those stats are very crude. Leaving your line = good and staying on your line = bad is utter nonsense. The shot stopping stat is interesting.

Who is a realistic signing from that group of keepers if we are to bring one in next season?

I said we should have gone for Etheridge a few weeks ago but got shot down because he made a mistake against us earlier this season... if we're going off these stats then he can't be that bad.

Think it's safe to say a GK is one of the priorities.

You don't realise how great it is to have a superb one until don't. How many times did Randolph save us with a worldie save? Under pulis we were constantly only ever 1-0 or 2-1 and he'd produce a moment of magic almost every game. Just one moment out of nothing wins the points.

To be honest we've been as bad with keepers as forwards. Randolph was the best we'd had since Skippy. We've had a lot of average or dross ones in between.

Warnock had a couple of decent keepers at Cardiff. I wonder if either will be targets?. I see Cardiff bought that philips from Charlton (we were linked). He's looked class in the few games I've seen him.

We've gone through a lot of keepers which is a good sign that we haven't had many good ones since 2008. Given, Dimi and Randolph the only decent ones we've had and one of them was only with us for a couple months!

I think the author admits those particular stats are crude, but still plenty in there worth considering with MB’s performances being repeatedly scrutinised this season.

Yeah Etheridge allways seemed pretty solid to me but a lot of fans will remember him having a shocker against us.

As an aside I have a 1 degree of separation from him having played with an international fullback who played with him for the Philippines! [/naff boast]
