Managers that criticise players in public

What's the point? Imagine you're Kim and you read your manager gave public criticism of your performance, detailing where you went wrong. What benefit does that give the player?

I always find it strange especially in modern football. I'm sure the manager would be delighted if players started coming out and highlighting tactic or team selection errors.

I can't see it ever being positive

There has been far worse than TT’s words over the years, they are pretty much observations.

Even still there are no benefits from even that type of comment being aired in the media by a manager.

Never understood it

Tuchel's leaving this month, and some of the board have started throwing him under the bus, so I expect he's just highlighting the issues he thinks are costing him.

Bayern Munich played really well, they should have won, a clumsy tackle cost them.

It's not something I like to see, but he's not got to worry about the long term impact, if they're knocked out next Wednesday, that's him done.

Agree, it's brainless and all to do with managers protecting their own reputation or trying to placate fans (some of whom like to see it).

It'd be a massive red flag for me if I was a chairman.

Luckily for managers, plenty of chairmen are pretty brainless too and wouldn't care.

As said above, managers often do it to deflect blame and a lot of fans quite like it after a particularly poor performance. However, it always comes back to bite the manager in the end (see Wilder's end of season address after our thumping at Preston on the final day of the season).

I think it’s performative. Just like the antics on the touchline, gesturing and whistling and bawling and hollering. They can’t hear you mate. Keep it in the dressing room.
