man looking to regenerate Bishop Auckland - from Stokesley

Yes, Jonathan Ruffer - it has been an incredible story - all starting from him hearing about the appeal to save the 17th century paintins. He then bought the building and then part of the town with the vision as well as the money to try to save the town. I have been following the project from the start because it is almost like a Victorian philanthropist in approach. He is trying to promote the rich deeper heritage to turn around the fortunes of a declining former mining and railway town. But it is being done so sensitively and so professionally but working so closely with the community - I think there is a model here for so many to follow. Maybe not directly copying but there is so much that can be learned.
Am hoping to bring the archaeologist and one of the main people within the Auckland Project over to speak in Mbro in May - a free public event. Hopefully everyone can come and here about it. But I would also advise anyone to get on the train and see the castle, the archaeology and the Miners Gallery. All so exciting.

I totally agree with your comments as he's doing a great job for no personal return. Hope he gets a Knighthood!
