Major Earthquake in Eastern Turkey.

Having recently spent a month in Turkey (including a fortnight out in the far east of the country), this one is close to the bone for me. Some very good friends in that part of the world ... as if they haven't had enough to worry about recently. Having been in Istanbul for the 5.8 in september, I really wouldn't want to experience a 6.9

The death toll is climbing rapidly ... thousands hurt, Many buildings ****ed. It's a big one. That's quite a poor area of the country too.

Turkish chap I used to work with told me about what happened to him and his family in the big earthquake of 1999. Particularly what the smell of heat, dust and death is like. Unimaginable.

Was thinking this, Istanbul may be ok, lots of the new buildings will be tough and hopefully survive. Where this one has hit it looks a lot more rural not many small cheaply built buildings survive big quakes.

When the 5.8 hit in September, I was filming at Sulemanye mosque. There was abject terror around me ... everyone in the city came out of their offices. The thing that struck me was that it is a chaotic city at the best of times ... with horrendous traffic jams from Galata bridge along to Besiktas. There would be pandemonium ... and in the Galata area as well as around the Grand Bazaar, the streets are narrow, withold buildings on either side and few open spaces to escape to. The thought of being in the Grand Bazaar itself in a large earthquake is terrifying ... panic, stampedes, falling rubble. We filmed in there the day after the 5.8 and my risk assessment was a bit tricky. We stayed pretty close to exits at all times.
