Magpies

When did they move in, exactly. When I was a kid I’d never even seen a magpie, but now they’re everywhere.

We do get kites here now, around the Parkway A19 junction, which I love to see, but I don’t appreciate the magpies so much for some reason. Is because of the association with Newcastle?

Am I subconsciously a birdist?

Magpies have had a rough ride over the years. Despite all the allegations, I’ve never ever seen one steal anything, and certainly not the expensive jewellery and cash that is oft levelled their way.

If we want a fair and equal society we need to address this injustice.

Good point. I’ve never, in all of my life, seen a single magpie with anything remotely resembling silverware…

Magpies eat other birds eggs and young birds( nasty bar stewards)
Yeah they do. They’re predators and have to live too. It isn’t nice though and I tend to chase them, and the sparrowhawk we have here, off.

We have owls too, which I enjoy, and they’re another predator. But they’re okay for some reason.

Currently I’m enjoying the little robin that follows me into the garage, to see when I’m up to now…

They one of the cleverest birds around, apparently, as members of the corvid family along with crows, rooks, ravens.

One looked me up an down in the garden the other day and I could tell what it was thinking: thick f*cker
Apparently crows have the ability to remember an individual human’s actions for up to 15 (edit 17) years.

No, it’s not wife memory skill level, but it’s impressive for birds…

But when magpies and kites breed...?

Where I walk the dog we have a few crows that hang around. They watch the dogs, if my old dog was on the lead they'd just hop a few yards away, if he was loose they would fly away. He would chase them to see what they were eating if he thought they had something tasty/nasty. Other dogs they would behave accordingly, they knew the behaviour traits of individual dogs. Clever buggers.

I had a magpie throughout the summer that kept coming into my garden, rummaging around my guttering and dropping moss on me when I was sat in the garden. I'm not sure whether he was trying to tell me to stop being lazy and clean it myself or if he wanted paying for doing it for me.
