Love the fact that there are no big money tickets in the squad

Part of the joy of this Team is that there are no Prima Donnas with big price tags on their backs. The squad is a mix of Academy lads, Loanees and bargain purchases. In the past some of the players who we overpaid for seemed like they were doing us a favour being here. Assombalonga, Fletcher, Saville, Flint etc to name a few. I suppose having a bigger price tag inevitably leads to pressure to perform which can end up being self destructive, and boy did they suffer from that. This team feels like a team playing without hang ups and the freedom is there for all to see.

Don’t get me wrong If we do get promoted of course we will need to open the cheque book . Spending big doesn’t necessarily mean a bad attitude , it’s just that over the last few years we,ve had a bad run of over overpriced , poor attitude players. The difference in our current squad is amazing and long may it continue

Bit hash putting Saville in that list, yes we overpaid for him after he’d had an exceptional one off season but his attitude and effort was spot on. Flint as well, he tried and always put the effort in he just wasn’t worth anywhere near what we paid for him.

Braithwaite deserves to be on your list though.

this is what happens when people do not want to come to your club so you over compensate them to make it happen.
there only loyalty then is to the pay check which is guaranteed anyways, so if they don't perform the worst case scenario is go out on loan maybe somewhere warm in an easier league
these are first players to turn their back on you when you go through hard times or a better offer comes in

might mean it costs us getting lots of players that we may have had in the past but do think overall the quality of peoples attitudes is much better

how many of these players would you expect to down tools if it was another covid season extension they didn't have to take part in? I would expect the number to be very minimal unless we were playing for nothing.

the amount that downed tools at the end of a relegation fight showed me why we were down at the bottom of the league in the first place with them clearly not playing at all for woodgate (who was a bad manager for us but is it any wonder when good chunk of the first half of the team were happy to collect a paycheck but not dig the the team of out a hole they were responsible for us being when it mattered the most)

I'd have put Gestede in that list before Braithwaite tbh.
put them both on, pure passengers just here for the wage, braithwaite turned his back on the club the minute he realised we were not going to smash the league and goto the premier league and tried for a transfer every window,. he was still going to try and leave if monk stayed, before monk left I had seen him arguing with fans after the match while signing autographs, was clear he did not want to be here at all

If you raffled feathers I doubt many would buy the tickets.

Out of interest anyone know what sort of wages players are on these days, and Carrick?

Zack Steffen - on loan from Man City.. £8m-£10m player

Dael Fry - premier league interest.. £12m-£15m

Ryan Giles - wolves wouldn’t let him go for cheap.. £8m

Hayden Hackney - not good enough..£8m and rising

Chuba Akpom - best player in the league.. £20m

Cameron Archer - £10m, £12m.. double it at the end of the season.

and that’s just the obvious ones

If we do go up lets not make the same mistake as last time and bring a load in that cost a fortune in fees and wages.
Brentford and Brighton have shown you can survive without going down that route.

Isn't football amazing at times

Chuba @ £20m - in July he wa s written off as going on a free.

I don't disagree he is best in the Championship at present - our Jordan Rhodes at his peak.

Deffo. A few long term type signings, like making Archer/Giles permanent and any signings should be those that don't cripple us if we come down and have resale value.

Now now. If you are Spanish enough, you are good enough.

I want a successful team I can relate to, not bothered whether it is bargain basement as now, or international class acts like 2003-07 era.

I'd hate to return to bargain basement Murdoch or Mowbray era (not their fault), but loved the Charlton ride and the Neal promise, the Rioch charge and enjoying this one too.
I'd also hate the wasted Monk and pulis era, but loved the McLaren class teams and Robson's adventure.

Stuani was great and he didn’t cost the earth

It's absolutely stunning to think that in the very recent years we've bought Britt / Braithwaite / Fletcher / Saville and even Flint for over 7mil a piece.

We now are buying players for 2-3 or less. We look far better for it. You have to say the new 'model' is a breath of fresh air. We will still sign some duds. Yet not expensive ones.

We have players in Mcgree and Forss who cost next to nothing. They are at a terrific age and could be sold on. It's not like the above who we had to give away or let contracts run down as nobody could pay them.

I throw the likes of Peltier / Smith / Watmore and even Bamba into terrific bits of business 👌
